Hi all,

I've a problem with my SC4 deluxe on my Mac.

When plopping the Tourist Trap the game crashes to desktop. Maybe there's a file conflict with the plugins, but...

prior to download plugins, i never got the Tourist Trap as a reward, so i just cannot imagine what file is causing conflict with the tourist trap. And there must be a conflict with the Trap, because my game never crashed before that.

Technical details:

I'm running SC4 Deluxe on Mac OS X 10.6.4 (snow leopard),

processor: 2.26 GHz intel core 2 duo

memory: 2Gb DDR3

If somebody could help, i'll be extremely thankful!

Bye!

Remove all your plugins and build the Trap again. If the game doesn't crash, you have right. Something cause conflict with the Trap. Add one plugin per time and test them one by one.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

One test was enough: I removed all plugins, then ran the game. And as i plopped the Trap, the game crashed.

So, no file conflict at all.

Now, what could be the problem?

Couple of things to look at:

If you got an exception report in your SimCity 4 folder, take a look at the text version of it, and see if it says anything other than an ACCESS VIOLATION which is the default excuse.  If so, this may give you a clue.

While you are in the file, check that the SimCity.exe version is at build 640.  If not, you may have missed one of the two updates.  You need both of them:  EP1 takes you to build 638 and the BATupdate takes you to 640.

You don't say how much virtual space you have or how big your plugin load is.  Since you have only 2GB of memory this can be important.  The game is memory resident.  The operating system has to page it if it doesn't fit.  If your plop of the lot causes a page fault, this may be the reason.  You need to examine your memory usage and see what else is in it besides the game, and if you can't fit, check your swap space to see if it is big enough.  Since the Apple O/S is UNIX based, I would bet you have a separate swap partition.  If so, consider making it at least 4GB.  I run on Linux, and my swap is over 6GB in two partitions.

One additional test you can make is to create a sandbox region (just open the game, and create a new region called sandbox).  Try to get the same CTD there.  If you don't then it is something in your city that is causing the trouble.

Well, my virtual memory is 2GB, so there shouldn't be problems... And the city where i was trying to plop the trap was 8000 people, very small.

About the simcity.exe version, i haven't it. I'm running the mac version, but i checked the .dat files and it seems i've the 640 version.

I'll try with the sandbox region.

    Thx for the help!

To get that lot released in the sandlot scenario you'lll probably have to use the youdontdeserveit command.
