Hello there, I'm just curious about how efficient nuclear power is. I'd like to build one, to eliminate some of the smog fest in my city because of the coal plants, do nuclear plants create much air pollution? And if it does melt down, how catastrophic is the damage?

All help appreciated, thanks.

I'm new to the game, but have played for awhile now. I'm going to be building Nuclear power as soon as possible because it produces a decent supply of power, takes of less space, and produces very little pollution. I think as long as you keep your plants covered under fire protection you'll be all set. If a meltdown does occur, i'm sure the radiation is enough to mess up your city for a long time lol Save often! As a side note, the efficiency of the plant is low, just like hydrogen, but once you have a lot of power demands, you won't have a lot of choices, because you'll want to save space. At this point in your cities life I would say Power Output > Efficiency

Well, The plant would be on the very edge of the city, so at worst it would affect my industrial area, along with the "low end" commercial. There's already enough air pollution there to re-create the 18th century London fog. So, radiation would feel right at home. 9.gif

Ok, i'd say go ahead and wait for it. I generally use coal to help my city grow big. Once i'm making a big profit I switch to Oil because it lowers the pollution by a decent amount. i can only imagine going Nuclear will eliminate a big portion of the pollution so much as you wouldn't have to isolate it so much. Just my .02 cents

When the Nuclear Power Plant gets on fire too long, it will meltdown and catastrophically explode. Radiation will cover a circle with a diameter of a small city. All buildings covered with fallout will stop functioning. After the explosion, there will be a crater and a 'ring of fire'.

    Meltdown

    Crater

If you're really into nuclear power, be sure to check out Cogeo's Real World Nuclear Power Plant Set, which contains power plants based on real world ones (as the title says).  They're more realistic, produce more energy, and are more affordable than the in-game nuclear plant, all at the same time.  I use them for all my cities.

If you are into fantasy, there are two lots you need together:  Antimatter Plant and the Artesian Water Plant.

These two, working together supply all the water and power you will ever need.  The reason you need the water plant is that the Antimatter plant uses water in huge gulps.  The Antimatter plant also eat all the pollution in a 4Km square tile (large city).

Costly to plop, cheap to run, and if you destroy the Antimatter Plant, you will irradiate your entire city for 5,000 years.

You'll be fine placing a nuclear power plant in your city, might be a few complaints but it's effective. The mod nuclear plants are great also. If you are worried about any disasters, download Daeley's Save Alarm for sc4devotion .com which will remind you to save every 10 minutes hopefully removing the side effects of a disaster.

EDIT: Also look at gshmails (sp?) Black Hole series of utilitie buildings here on the stex

I use Cogeo's plant and highly recommend it.  Funny thing is that prior to this thread I haven't had a plant blow up on me.  Then the other nite I was working on my city and was noticing that the power levels were starting to drop.  I kept increasing the funding but it only temporarily fix the issue.  I was thinking it was a bug but then it blew up just like in the picture.
