Bad performance on brand new custom computer

Hey fellow simmers. I recently built a new computer. Here are my specs:

intel Core i7 930 processor @2.80 GHz (quad core)

6gb Crucial Performance RAM

nVidia GeForce GTX 470

500GB HDD

I am playing on a 22" widescreen monitor and want to play at 1680x1050.

In a medium sized city, the game lags a lot and whenever I move the mouse, its not a smooth transition like on my old computer. Now, I move the mouse and the city moves, stops, moves, stops, moves, etc...

I don't understand how a brand new computer (a pretty good one may I add) can't handle this game.

Do any of you have any tips? Anything like command lines parameters or anything? Help is much appreciated.

What command line are you ccurrently using? Given that you have lots of horsepower there, most problems of this nature relates to either video card problems mostly the drivers and /or the version of DirectX that you are using.. I'd recommend that you use versoin 9.0C, but that may be just me. Does it matter whether you use software or hardware settings? I assume you have all video settings to "set by application" (in your video card settings) and are NOT using fancy card capabilites on SC4. Do all cities give you problems or is it just large cities? Do you have large amounts of custom content?

Currently, I'm not using any command lines. I have the latest nVidia drivers and I am using DirectX11. Though I should have all previous versions installed also. Right? I'll have to try software instead of hardware. Yes, all my settings are "set by application". My problems arise when I move the screen over a populated area. When I move off to unpopulated areas (forest), the game gets much smoother. I understand that there will be a difference, but it shouldn't be this bad. I do have a lot of downloadable content but as I said, my other older system ran the game much smoother. Maybe its a result of the 1680x1050 resolution?

No, if you  don't install them, you don't "have all previous versions" .. they can co-exist however, but must be installed from the microsoft site. The resolution could play a part as of course background app's... especially flash content, etc. Try running with absolutely all background tasks off and running fullscreen (you MUST modify startup in order for the SC4 to map properly to your monitor size)

    -f -customresolution:enabled -r1680x1050

Appended to your shortcut properties (outside the quotes)

Just trying to help.. obviously finding "the secret" is a bit hit or miss and applies differently to each individual hardware/ driver combination. Most people find they have to search for the proper startup until they find a good one for their setup.. part of the penalty for playing a game that was developed pre-2000

SC4BOY, I think I solved my problem. I set the parameter cpucount=# to 4. This resulted in a laggy, choppy game also. So, I set the cpucount=# to 1 and the game runs really smoothly now. Thanks for helping me out.
