Crashing to desktop

 Specs:

Sim City 4: Deluxe Edition

Running on mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro

using Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard (upgrading to 10.6.4 when I get to it)

NVIDIA GeForce 320M - Running SC4 using 1280x800 res.
2.4 GHz - Intel Core 2 Duo (64-Bit) Processor 

4GB Memory - 250GB HD

Ever since I downloaded plugins, my game crashes to the desktop. It varies greatly. Sometimes, it crashes right when it reaches the regions screen, sometimes it crashes when I open a city and sometimes it crashes when placing down something (any item; roads, zones, parks, police/fire stations, hospitals, etc).

After crashing to the desktop, the game music still plays and continues to do so until the end of the song. If you start the game up again, the music from the old game plays until you get to the region screen.

I think I have done almost everything. I have removed every plugin and it did not help. I am at the point where it's time to stop lurking on the forum and actually use it because I am so tired of this crap. I absolutely love the game and am so happy I found this website as I have been playing SC4 since age eight, I am 13 now. And yes, I do mean age eight, as you can guess, my cities were pretty horrible.

Have you applied all the Maxis patches? (preferably up to version 640)

Simcity doesn't like more than 1 core so you have to disable one core.

So it can work properly.

When in region mode press Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to task manager then right click simcity 4.exe and then click on set affinity then uncheck the extra core.2.gif

Note: You have to do this every time you play simcity 4.

    I'm sorry to bump this thread. It was this or posting another one o_O.

    I have all of the patches.

    I have the latest version of NAM and RHM, both for Mac (yes, Mac). All of my patches are Mac-compatible. The game most commonly crashes when placing roadways or once opening up a city. If the dialog box saying that I need to realign the city with neighboring ones, if it crashes, it crashes there, no matter what I choose.

    Turn off Auto Edge Reconciliation in the game options, and then it won't even ask.

    Could Norton Internet Security and anti-virus be responsible for simcity 4 crashing because it was working the day before I installed norton then the next day I run the game it crashes when I hover over a certain part of my city... If so maybe I will have to uninstall norton because even if I turn it off or put it on silent mode while I run simcity 4 it still crashes or maybe could it be that i'll just have to reinstall simcity 4?

    I have turned off Auto Edge Reconciliation and it seems to be crashing less, but there still is not a significant change. Is there any 100% clean-cut solution that will fix this?

    Be careful with the alt+tab thing. Make sure to back up your cities regularly because there is a possibility that you can lose a city from your region never to be recovered.

    When this was happening to me, the problem was swap space.  SimCity is a memory hog.  Your paging system has to have enough space to page the game and its in-core stuff, which is all of it, including plugins and city tables.

    Make sure that you have at least 4GB of paging/swap space allocated to your operating system, and see what you can do to keep it from dispatching more than one CPU at the same time to the game.  The game will not multi-process, and will go nuts.

    If you look at the exception reports folder, you can get a very limited idea of what happened.  If you are looking at ACCESS VIOLATION, this is the catch-all for memory trouble.  The game doesn't understand paging, so a bad page fault, or a refusal will get this same message.  The game doesn't retry.

    I don't know the Mac O/S but you should be able to:

    1.  Set your swap space at or above 4GB;

    2.  Restrict the .exe to running in only one processor.

    You may want to consult with Apple or an O/S X geek to solve this problem.

    I am currently having fun getting SC4RH to run under Linux/wine.  Pretty good, but there are some glitches.

    I am pretty sure that my swap space is above 4GB. I'm not using an .exe file, rather an .app file and I have already researched being able to run the .app file in only one processor, but on the Mac it is easier said than done. Anything else?

    Also, i hav noticed lately that when I quit my SC4 game, I get an exception report. Any reason for this?
