Shalom! I was just wondering if there were any other Jews on Simtropolis. I didn't want to be left out so, comment if you are, or even if you aren't.

I have Jewish friends and I agree with the Jewish faith as much as I agree with the Christian faith even though I do not practice Judaism.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Then how do get to the Temple on Shabbat without breaking the rules? Driving a car on Saturdays is some sort of sin, so is travelling outside of your "village" (I do not know if this means neighborhood or city) on Saturdays.

Nevermind, you must be a Reform Jew, which is similar to a Jewish version of an Episcopalian. I always liked the word, "Shalom," no other word except "Aloha" means the same thing.

Our Congregation actually has a lot of people that drive to the Synagogue. When the majority of the people live more than 15 minute drive to the Synagogue. Actually I'm not reform, I'm technically Orthodox, but the only synagogue close to us is a Messianic Synagogue, and their services are on Fridays. So we go to the Synagogue on Friday, than have our own service on Saturday inside of our home.

    Shalom

And so your family is moving to a Virginia coal mining town?  Where will you worship among all those gentiles?  I doubt you will be able to form a Minyan in the town you are going to.

I am not Jewish, either, but then I have lived a long time.

No, my parents decided it was for the best to stay here, especially if I'm going into Politics. 4.gif. They also realized that since there are almost no Jews in West Virginia, except in cities, that we would have a hard time adjusting to life back in the hills.

Are there that many Jewish people in Canada? I don't know, but Canada is really cool.

Well, let's see.  Most of the big money started out as Jewish concerns.  Sam Bronfman built a rum running business into the Seagram Empire and the C.E.M.P. investment trust which owns Empire Realty and Cadillac Fairview Corp.  And that is only one example that leaps to mind.

Toronto has several synagogues and Jewish private schools.  Montreal the same, but I am not sure about the west.  Many of my colleagues when I was working refused to work on Saturday, usually from sunset Friday.  I was invited to some Seders and tried to attend them all, but really only made some of them.

As with the United States, there is a heavy Jewish presence in the Theater Arts, Television and the Cinema business.

Where else could you look in this repressed 19th Century society in the early 1900's for creativity?  To Jewish immigrants, to Ukranians who escaped from Joe Stalin, to Italian immigrants who ran from Musselini, and to the many, many sensible Europeans who came here in the early to mid 1930's.  And also to the pool of old French colonists who kept the motto 'Je me souviens' and kept the name of the first governor general of Canada alive (the Sieur de Champlain, that's who).  And we must not forget the people of coloured origin who managed to get here on the underground railway, and who have contributed heavily ever since.

We are a multi-cultural mosaic of peoples from the original Canadians, including the Inuit, to the whole flock of folks who came, saw, and stayed.

I didn't know that the Theatrical Arts had a lot of Jewish Folks. Because what I am, we're not allowed to do a lot of things that Theatric Folks participate in.

OK, that makes complete sense. Christians would benefit greatly if they tried to be Messianic Jews for a year. I have a friend that was raised as a nondenominational Christian but converted to a Messianic Jew. She even eats Kosher, which is very difficult to do when one has digestive issues.

I'll just bet.  With the strict kosher rules, some foods are just out, and others have to be specially prepared.  As I recall, there is rather a lot of fat in kosher cooking.  Heavy on "dairy" which may easily raise the dickens with a sensitive digestive system.

The Dietary Restrictions you get used to. It's the other rules that are the dickens. Like which shoe you put on first based on whether you are left-or-right handed.

Too bad Superstar isn't around much these days.  He's from Israel.  Last I heard, he was doing his stint in the army, which is one reason we don't see him much.   He has stuff on the STEX.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I don't know of many Jewish people in western Canada. The first mayor of my city was Jewish (and his brother was the chief of our Supreme Court in the 1980s) but according to the census there are only about 100 Jewish people in the city. They don't have a dedicated place of worship that I know of, the only thing listed in the phone book is some guy's house.

I didn't think there was a large Jewish population west of the Ontario border.  The reason is that Montreal and Toronto pretty much attract Jewish immigrants because there are large communities there.  In some neighborhoods in Montreal you would swear you are living in a Russian Stettle, except nobody hassles you.  These communities come with their usual set of old mama gossips and matchmakers along with the tradition of arranged marriages with all the trimmings.  Of course any Jewish girl is free to move out, but many don't.

    Howdy, Shabat, Salaam!

I'm Muslim and Catholic, but I've heard a lot from my Jewish friends that Judaism is very similar to both of my religions, which is interesting as they all basically boil down to the same fundimental beliefs (i.e: monotheism, ethics, etc.). Also, I once did a report on Judaism, and I found that their dietary laws are very similar to that of Islam. It is a very interesting religion, and while I do not practice it I respect it and find it to be very neat! 4.gif

I would expect the dietary laws of Kosher and Halal are nearly if not actually identical.  The both spring from the realities of life in the eastern end of the Med.  Both people's are descended from Abraham, only the Islamics are on the wrong side of the blanket.

I think it is pretty clear that Mohammed must originally have been a Jew.  He couldn't really have been anything else at the time unless he was an early Christian, maybe Coptic.  Remember that the Hejira was in the 7th century CE.
