Cities XL Mod download site

So from GlobexCo's idea of trying to revitalize the modding community i also wanted to try and centralize all of the mods into a easy to find edit and post area So i came up with a Google Code Project named Cities XL Mods  With the idea that anyone can join and have the ability to Post/Edit downloads, and it will provide a wiki for mod creators to post information about their mods (or for others to create it for them)

Now before the comment start i want to say While there are other solutions out there like sourceforge, this would be the easiest for non technical people to get into and as it is hosted by Google it will be fast, reliable, always easy to use, and will only get better features.

I will be looking for at least 2 people to help administer the project as well, these people will have the ability to add people and edit their permissions

One of the last benefits i want to mention is the SubVersion System, this would allow us to take on really big complicated mods, as it can be and shared between all the developers.

Let me know what you think

Edit:

A few of the benefits for you and everyone for that matter..

  • All of the mods in one place will increase traffic and visibility of EVERYONES mods
  • You can Archive old versions of your mods (because you never know)

Good idea!

It may not be another place where we are free publishing our works and mods

Go on, go on!!

Bye and be happy.

Jejeje GOOGLE RULES!!! :-)

It has a pretty ugly interface but it is useful.

It is also a new door that opens to the community of modders.

People have a tendency to close them lately.

Maybe the way CitiesXS does it?

1. Upload wherever you want, this place the OP has created is fine, if you don't like it, use somewhere else.

2. Start a thread here for your mod. In that thread can be discussions of the mod and updates can be posted (best if by editing the first post with the new updated link) with version information.

3. We have a mod index thread that links everyone easily to all the available mods threads.

Yeah that would be one of the best ways. Just simple for everyone to find their mods.

For uploads we can also use the STEX...

But an external site (like Google Code) can be very useful for tutorials and links.

While here we'll post an index (sticked) with all the links (to mods, tools and tutorials).

Reply to 1. This is what i wanted to avoid, not have the mods all over the place, try to centralize them so you can find all the files at one place

Reply to 2. i would still see this happening, the idea is not to make simtropolis obsolete but to just put the files in one place becuase after awhile threads get buried and lost

Reply to 3. the issue here is it relies on that one person to update, with a Google Project (or it can be done else where to) anyone can update the main list of mods. in your secenario that person leaves and the thread is history very fast

    @ skimbo

It does not have to be Google projects it was a easy way for me to toss up a rough demo of what i was thinking.  The nice thing about it being in a place like Google projects or Sourceforge is the oversight (moderators) do not exsist compared to here, Unless MC were to contact them (hard to do being closed) So mods like the one being discussed here have a home

But with the way I suggested, there is a thread for each mod, so people can discuss, ask questions, make suggestions, see when there's been a versio change, etc. To actually download they will go elsewhere via a link in that thread..

The index thread, if it is kept fairly up to date and is pinned, will keep mods from getting lost or buried.

You can have more than one person update the thread. I'm sure a number of people could be given the power. And usually when you posted a new mod you would also post in the index thread, asking that your thread be added to the index. If someone could do it, they would, but even if they didn't, your post in the thread would be noticed.

In your way of doing things we would all have to go to yet another web site contstantly to check for updated or new mods. We've already got a community here, why try to start a new one elsewhere? I know I don't like checking four different web sites for new things and updates.

Or why not do it in the STEX?

Your last point to Skimbo may be the reason it needs to be done your way, we'll see. But otherwise I personally don't want to have to root around on yet another site to find mods, find out when things have been updated, etc. Yet I am just one person...

I think this is a good idea. Keeping the mods on a central and easy to find place can only be good. I personally don't know terribly much about computers and stuff, and I think I'm not the only one. With one place to download will allow these people to find their way too.

Does the STEX work in another way or something? It is on this site, so seems like a good idea too.

STEX would work but you can tell its meant for Sim City 4 (one game) it would be nice if Cities XL was split off then i never would of brought this up i just find it a bit clunky for multiple games (Ie the search) there is no way to say search onyl Cities XL hence why it would be nice to separate them

@mentarman im not sure if i am not following you or your not following me im not saying we dont post threads here for the mods. Jut place the raw files in 1 place (like the stex, but you can see my issues with STEX above)

STEX files have already got tags for CXL/SC4, they were added in November, when the first mods have been released...

And in the STEX search section there's already a button for Simcity4 and one for CXL...

Yes, the search system is the same for CXL and SC4... but with only two mods, there's nothing to search 18.gif
