Just got the game

Just downloaded the game. It's very fun and encourages creativity, which I enjoy. I just get overwhelmed with all the advancement, like expanding to different cities in the region? Is that hard? I've also seen some pretty killer cities online and such, but not included in those cities is a large agricultural area. Is Ag necessary??

Ag. is a good foundation in the beginning. Cheap and reliable. I have also seen the cities posted on this site and others. I still have not seen a truly remarkable rural Ag. picture. There is a lot of custom content available here. It would make a great challenge to come up with something and make a journal. Hmmmm?

Downloading the game (SC4)  is strictly prohibited and illegal.

According to Rule 5 at Simtropolis, at least....

5. Prohibited Actions. It is strictly and expressly prohibited to post or upload:

  • Anything relating to the pirating, or copying, of any software game title;
  • Anything referring to CD keys or no CD cracks;
  • Any content malicious to computer hardware or software, such as viruses;
  • Any content that violates another person's privacy;
  • Any material that is the work of another individual but is being represented as original. Permission must be obtained from the original creator, and due credit must be given, before including any element of that creator's work in custom content upload.

Maybe we should lock this one.....

    Ummm, sorry if I didn't use the right "term" but I paid for the game. I bought it at bestbuyhttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/The+SimCity+Box+-+Windows/8876834.p?id=1210378662943&skuId=8876834&st=simcity4&lp=1&cp=1 the package with all of the SimCity's. I have a mac and when you put the CD in you have to drag it to your Apps which produces a loading bar. I guess I interpreted it as "downloading" but I guess the correct term would be installing.

    No problem4.gif We just take our rules very seriously49.gif

    First off..Welcome to simtropolis! Heres a ducky!40.gif

    Now..back to buisness......

    Agriculture isnt needed perse...but it does add a realism to the game that wouldnt be there otherwise...to an extent (see City Journals) I personally enjoy adding Agriculture myself, but i havent figured out a way to change the fields through custom content yet....or maybe im just a bit lazy....hmmmm41.gif

    I have seen some pretty awesome Agriculture, but its definately not been quick and easy to create those. You need time, patience, and a whole lotta custom content!

    For expanding into the seperate cities, it does take a bit of getting used to, But it definately is extremely useful. industry for example...you can always put it in a seperate city so it doesnt pollute your residential. Again, its all up to your doing. Like i said earlier, It takes time and patience to create those 'Killer Cities' (which i have none of 31.gif .) Its not hard, just time consuming.

    One last rule of thumb.....Be creative! There is not one set way of doing things. DO AS YOU PLEASE! 2.gif

    And if there are any questions, just ask a member or always visit the omnibus here (lots of tutorials, hints, other information) or visit the new member thread here. (many questions to be asked and answered! )

    Edit: and as it seems your a mac user, You can always visit the mac thread here (wow...6 years on simtropolis and i finally found the mac thread46.gif)

    Awaiting signature arrival...

    If you install the CAM (Colossus Addon Mod) and then the CAM Agriculture pack, it adds some really nice farms...dairy farms...all different fruit and veg and as they grow and upgade they turn into woodland preserves and heritage sites....haven't got to that point yet, but looking forward to it and even the early stages look great!

    Note: The links I posted won't have download links until you register, which is really simple.

    **Edit**

    2nd note: The farm pack addons also have dependencies which need to be downloaded and that can be time-consuming if the links are a bit out-dated, but it's worth doing when you have some free time because all the CAM packs and CAMpatible buildings add so much to the original game!

    It's ok, we just wanted to make sure you dont get killed my a moderator who thought you 'pirated' it!

    I would first ignore the STEX, familiarise yourself with SC4, then get the NAM. Experiment with it, then download some more items for the game.

    Ask any one of us if you have problems.

    I agree with ROFLyoshi on this. The first thing to do with SC4 (actually every single other game, though) is to learn and understand the game before you make it 'any more difficult then a game could already be' by adding custom stuff.

    The CAM, and all it's dependencies, can be downloaded at sc4devotion. It's another site, where you need to register before you can download anything. As for the NAM, it's here on the STEX.

    Welcome, neophyte.  This game is an adventure turning into an obsession, so be careful and remember to smell the roses once in a while.

    While I-Ag(Key Z) is not necessary, you can get a city in the black pretty quickly by using it.  Try this:

    1. Put a wind generator someplace in a small tile.
    2. Around this, add six farms with streets in between.
    3. Pick and intersection and place a couple of Cs level 1(A) 1 x 2 lots at the corner
    4. Add five or six R level 1(Q) 1 x 2 lots going away from the intersection on each street.
    5. Sit tight and watch the development.
    Note:  You can build the lots directly on the farm land provided you let the farms develop first, and avoid placing lots on top of the farm buildings.  Your farm workers will live in the houses along with some commerical workers.

    After your budget has recovered, you can consider other options, like some level 2 Industrials(X) at the end of a rail line away from your village.  Should cause demand for more residential and more commercial.  Any level 2(W, S, X) and above lots require water for full development.  A water tower will do if it is not on top of the industrial land, which will pollute and shut it down.  Farms are also sources of pollution, so don't put your water  tower too close to them either.  Somewhere in the middle of the rail line is good, but you must have power there.  Farms don't need water, nor do level 1 buildings of any kind, but you will get better development of residential and commercial if they are watered.

    Remember to run your railroad tracks off the edge of the tile to give you an export point for the industrial production.  Don't forget to have a passenger station at each end, and, if the industrial park is larger than about 8 x 8, you will need transit in the industrial area for the Sims to get to work.  They won't walk very far.

    Don't place a fire station until you get your first fire as they cost a lot to place and maintain.  Once you start providing services you can bump the taxes a little.  The more service you provide, the more taxes you should be able to collect, but watch it, things start going to pot if they are too high.

    Check your crime display periodically, and place a cop shop if it gets too much.  You will need the Crime Does Not Pay mod from the STEX or your police are not very effective.  After you have one police station, consider police kiosks in the crime fringe areas.

    There are certain items on the STEX that amount to necessary fixes.  Check the Omnibus and be sure you get them.

    Have fun!
