In my old city, Northwoods, I have had problems integrating the various neighborhoods into one-another. Therefore, I have decided to start a new city, Rosenkilde, where every single piece of infrastructure will be put in place before I start building any buildings.

So far it's coming along at a nice pace, and I have decided to show you what has been done so far.

At the center of the city will be a large park surrounded by high density elite/executive residences:

cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_2.jpg

Each of the "legs" in the triangle will lead to various centers; one to the medium/low density housing for elites/executives, one to the finance district and the final leg will lead to the high-density skilled workers district:

East from the triangle, across the river, I have placed three highways, that have the purpose of channeling traffic from the medium density residences surrounding them, towards the financial district:

cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_4.jpg

These highways will feature a number of on/off ramps:

The river floating through the city will have roads on both sides, which will allow the communters to admire the water-front as they drive to work:

And don't mind all the white "snow" plazas. They are placeholders until I figure out what I want there 4.gif

Wow --- how did you manage to build all this w/out any positive money flow?

Since the Sandbox mod is out, 90% of the people who play this game is using it. Because, with that mod, all our ideas can come to live, without needing to worry about money.

    Seriously awesome city9.gif More3.gif

i like your designs, especially the "slanted/curved" intersections. a lot more artistic than the normal grid.

Well, I don't intend to cheat --- if your money flow is positive, there's no need to use sandbox --- I like worrying about the budget - particularly these days the economy shows us that cities must be careful about their operating / capital budgets. So personally I'm going to continue playing without the sandbox. Hope you understand.

I like worrying about a budget too, but when I want to make a city, where every little piece of infrastructure is planned out and pre-designed, I don't like being limited by cash.

My first city here (and my 10th city or so in total), Triviere, was made 100% without any mods.

For my second city, Northwoods, I changed my starting cash to 1.5Mil credits, but other than that, no "cheats" were used.

This time I just want the city to look impressive, I don't intend to actually play it. I have a lot of other cities I can play, this time I am just going 100% for the aesthetics.

That's cool -- this approach gives you a chance to really explore the possibilitites of Citites XL without any constraints. I definitely understand.

     Another sneak-peak update:

The infrastructure is coming along nicely, and I will soon be 50% done 4.gif

The area around the river is almost complete. It will feature a park on both sides, that will eventually be surrounded by high density residences for skilled workers. Moth other areas around this end of the river is low/medium density residences:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_0-1.jpg

On the other side of the river, work is being done on the area for the executive high-density area:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_01.jpg

Finally,I have taken some mountain-top vistas over the (almost) complete part of the city:

I expect the infrastructure to be complete this weekend, and I will start inhabiting the city 4.gif

How do you measure the blocks / lots between your streets to make sure your zoned lots will fit in them?

I place the amount of zones between them, then create the road and delete the zones 4.gif

If I want to reserve slots for two high-density buildings, I build three low-density buildings next to one-another (since I obviously don't have access to the high-density buildings yet), and they will equal two high-density zones.

If I want only one high-density building, it's a bit tricky. Basically you make space for two high-density zones, then draw out roads in 45 degree angles (use small roads). Where the two roads meet, the half-way point will be. Now you have to carefully place a road that is slightly off-center from this road. The middle of the small, temporary, road should line up with the side of the new road.

Wow, I'm impressed! I like your zoning and pre-building everything.

Looking forward seeing some housing 2.gif

Spikespiegel, You can select advanced option from the Options menu and it unlocks all buildings from the beginning of the city, no waiting for high density buildings, or am I misunderstanding why they are locked and you already know this. Sorry if that is the case...

With over half the city's layout done, I have started to place residential zones.

I have started around the dual-park, and all images in this update is from around there. In addition to this, I have started on the financial district and the suburbs.

First, two overview photos from the park:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_0-2.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_3-2.jpg

Then a shot from inside the park (I am still working on the skyline):

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_2-2.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_4-2.jpg

Finally, I also have two screenshots from a random street, very close to the park:

     Another update from me.

I really like this piece of road here, and I might have to attempt something like it elsewhere in the city:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_5-3.jpg

The park area is shaping up:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_3-3.jpg

And you can slowly start to sense the waterfront:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_4-3.jpg

Just next to the park is a neighborhood, which features small canals:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_9.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_2-3.jpg

The financial district still has a while to go:

    cxl_screenshot_rosenkilde_6-1.jpg

You can already sense the suburban atmosphere, just outside the city limits:

Nice. An entire master planned city, kind of like the way they're building up Dubai.
