So, does placing a couple of airports on opposite sides of a region map actually work?

If two cities, let's say they are separated by 5 city tiles with no rail or road connections in between, have aiports, does the transportation map actually show a connection path between them if they have airports?

I've never placed an airport in my regions. They're too expensive to upkeep. I'm just wondering if they actually work. I use a lot of rail. It's cheap.

@diamonddog_74: Sims won't travel from an airport to another like they do with ferries. What airports do is increasing your commercial demand and relieving some of your commercial and residential caps, if I remember well. One thing is sure, you cannot use airports to make your sims commute to other cities.

So they're really only so you can "unlock" higher stage development levels? What if you don't have room in the city map tile for an aiport? Can you still get past those commercial and residential caps?

On this Omnibus article [link] is explained what you need in this case. I copy-paste the part you're interested in.

Or you can say goodbye to all these ugly and undersized airports with one more plugin:

With this pack, come some very old (year 2003) airports relotted and modded trying to make them more realistic. You won’t need them and you can delete all except one of the lots coming with this pack, which is a 1x1 airport lot. It looks like a plaza and pretends to be a Maxis airport which you can plop wherever you want in your city. Then, you simply can get rid of your Maxis airports. quote>

Here's my contribution, Fairfax Intercontinental, loosely based on George Bush Intercontinental in Houston. The Runway/Taxiway layout is quite accurate, I changed the terminals however to fit the scale of SC4. I hope you like it.

Overview:

And some general shots:

I'm open to critique so if you think anything is not so realistic, please let me know ^^

MrBrightside, that is a ridiculously insane and awesome airport.  If there's any problems with it, they're not in the pictures you posted.

It's probably a big, risky step to put one's first attempt at creating a custom airport on this thread, but I cannot see a better way to get helpful critisism.  And besides, I just finished the basic layout so I'm swelling with pride to the point that it's affecting my brain.

Obviously there's still much to do,  but this is the small, lively Clemont International Airport:

North%20Shore-Feb.%205,%20651285458238.p

North%20Shore-Feb.%207,%20651285458266.p

North%20Shore-Mar.%2019,%20651285458400.

North%20Shore-Mar.%2030,%20651285458480.

North%20Shore-Apr.%2026,%20651285458604.

The biggest problem I ran into was space.  I ended up having to make the main terminal 3,517 feet long and only 250 feet wide at the widest point.  Helluva walk from gate A1 to Z9, huh?

And I didn't have nearly enough room to put in all of the gates I wanted.  I had to settle for nine 747 gates and two dozen or so regional jet gates.  Like I said, a small international airport.

And I've got a LOT of scenery to fill in, but I wanted ideas for the layout more than my aesthetic sense.  If it's the worst airport you've ever seen, let me know!

The taxiways and runways are a bit too close to each other for comfort, especially behind the 747s. There's also usually a bit more room for maneuvering behind gates so you could maybe move the main runway 3-4 squares and the taxiway/edge of apron one square back. Also get rid of the cliff face right next to the main runway, if the move back still leaves one there. It's awfully close. And what is that weird round thing next to the runway in the upper right of the first picture? Additionally, I really can't think of a city that would have demand for so many long intercontinental flights and yet so few short flights that your gate configuration would seem appropriate. Maybe remove a few of your big gates and replace them with smaller ones. Finally, those little commercial buildings look really out of place next to the parking lot of an international airport, and I'm not convinced the casino is exactly the right scale either. So, lots of small things to improve but not too bad for a first attempt.

'Preciate it, zeddic. Space was definitely my biggest problem, and things are way too close together near the east-west runway. But the problem is, way out at the western end of it, it goes right along the edge of the coast (Off of any pictures). So to move it back I'd either have to shorten it or create a 1000 foot land extension into the water. Major money and it'd look kind of weird. What I should have done was planned better and put Terminal A further in, and sacrifice some parking space. I'll find a solution. (Open to suggestions, though.)

Those commercial buildings will be replaced with offices or parking. I want to keep a few of them, though; you know, car rental places, travel agencies, gas stations, you see a lot of that around airports.

And yeah, that cliff has got to go. Can't have my 747's scraping their wings every time they take off. And more domestic flights; got it.

Thanks again!

Oh, BTW:  That weird round thing at the top of the picture is the apron for the mayor's private plane.  It wasn't my idea.  See, the U-Drive-It skydiver plane that shows up with RMIP runways always started out on that spot, and would always go back to it when I tried to move it.  So instead of having it sit on the grass on a hill in the middle of nowhere, I put a little apron area right underneath it.  It leads out to the runway.

Work in progress but thought I'd throw up the two pics I have to here for a bit of constructive criticism:

The Main 747 Terminal (front), exclusive Concorde Terminal and Terminal 2

NightAirport.jpg

Same but at night

Also I've seen a lot of A380 gates in this thread but can't seem to find them anywhere, if anyone could link me to a set that'd be great! (I already have Tabi's A380 props)

This is another section of my test airport, showing some in-development content, as well as a bit of stuff you may already know. The small Air New Zealand Hangar and the Airbus A330-200 MMP are in beta-testing now, and the Air Post depot will be "internationalised" (I'll remove New Zealand Post titles, so it's more generic), then the lot will be finalised.

Hey - Nice airport and runway layout...For future reference your one runway that say 35L the "L" for left dshout be at the bottom of the runway and your runway parallel to it (your 26R) should actually be called 35R. The FAA sets runway numbers by the magnetic compass heading. Im a general avaition pilot I know! Im not being mean just giving you some advice next time to make your airports look real. Look at mine for instance (middle of this topic thread) see how i make the runways realistic
