Seaports and regional play

I'm trying to find the best place for a seaport for my region, but I was wondering how seaports affect regions? Is the benefit shared or is it specific to the city in which it's built?

Also, do seaports and railroad link up? If so, how?

Welcome to Simtropolis!

Seaports are a great way to boost industrial demand. Seaports affect both the region and the city its located in. Build seaports in a city where you have a high industrial population. Not only will the city you build the seaport in experience a higher demand, but as you create neighbor connections your whole region will benefit from the seaport.

As for rail to seaport connections, check out some of the custom seaports on the STEX. I swear I have seen a custom made seaport with rail connections in city journals. Many of the custom seaports you can download off the STEX are better looking and affect your region/cities more positively than the Maxis-made ones.

To supplement what Mikeaut1 said, you should have a look at Pegasus's lots. The "core lot" has rail connection, and also look way better then the standard Maxis one. For the rest of the lots, search for "PEG CDK3 SP" in the STEX. Be sure to get the dependencies!

The rail connection works, but not exactly the way it does in real life: Freight isn't shipped to the seaport by train, loaded onto a ship and then.. off you go. As far as I know, the freight train traffic is converted into truck traffic inside the seaport itself, and then loaded onto ships. However, this is due to game limitations and doesn't affect your gameplay in any way.

Hope this helps.

If you hate the Maxis seaport, here are some good links to ones that people have made(Note:they may have dependences):

Thanks for all the advice! I decided on placing it in my busiest industrial city (although it invovled some unsightly terrain manipulation). Hopefully we'll start seeing some of them trickle down economics in action.
