Steve Huxter, who was head of Sealand's animal care and training department then, said Wednesday he's surprised it happened again. He says Tilikum was a well-behaved, balanced animal.quote>

Killing 3 people is seriously something a well-behaved orca does, I guess...

iv never seen the point of the performing whale/dolphin/sea critter.

what scientific value is teaching a dolphin to jump thru a flaming hoop.

I think it would be wise for the trainers to cut their hair shorter for now on.

Well, supposedly, there are no documented cases of orcas attacking humans in the wild. This one has now attacked people three times. It would seem to give credence to the idea that maybe living in a tank gets them bothered... or, maybe not. Maybe they don't like being ridden around and made to do tricks. Maybe the crowds freak them out. There are a lot of things that are different about being at Sea World as opposed to in the wild besides the living in a tank thing.

....or maybe (and here's the best one!), it's simply a matter of statistics. The orcas at Seaworld and whatnot are in the direct presence of multiple people every day. How often do an orca in the wild and a human cross paths? Not very. I daresay most animals, wild or captive, are capable of attacking people under the right circumstances. What differs is A) how often people encounter said animal, and B) how much damage it can do. Bees attack people all the time. But it's just a sting... And if bees and humans didn't live in the same areas, wild bee stings would be rare, too.

Regardless of the reason, however, the fact remains that any animal raised in captivity isn't going to be fit to survive in the wild - and thus "Freeing Willie", as emotionally pleasing as the idea may be, is very much not in Willie's best interest. Willie will likely die in short order if you do that.

"Because of his size and the previous deaths, trainers were not supposed to get into the water with Tilikum"

I would have thought that, with previous deaths, it might have been time to not get near him at all...

People think it won't happen to them. Hopefully now there will be more training to prevent this in the future.

Not necessarily.  Captive animals sometimes kill their handlers when the animal was most likely just attempting to have fun.

Tilikum has spent most of his life in captivity.  It is highly unlikely he would be able to survive in the wild.
