You laptop might have a wide screen, so you may need to use a custom resolution. Right click on the game shortcut, and choose "properties", in the target box add the tag to the path.

"C:\Program Files\Simcity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -CustomResolution:enabled -r1440x900x32 -f -intro:off

-w = windowed

-f = full screen

-r = resolution

Add a space after the quotation marks of the path. and one after each tag. Use a resolution your monitor can display.

You must start the game with the shortcut at least once for the change to take effect.

I just have to say how grateful I am for you posting this. I had the same problem as OP but when you linked this costumresolution, I could finally get into the game and change the game resolution to 1280 instead of 1600 which I had changed to before.

Thank you!! <3<3

EDIT: Oh, and sorry for replying in an old thread. Maybe I shouldve just PMed instead..

I just upgraded to a new laptop running Windows 7 64 Bit. SC4 runs fine, but I used to play it on my Vista comp in a window. It's a widescreen so I'm using the custom resolution command line, but when I try to add "-w" to the shortcut target the game won't even run. Any ideas? Does anyone play SC4 on 7 in a window?

Sounds like an options conflict. I don't think anyone has posted this before, but there is a possibility that the customresolution option implies full screen. If that's the case, that's the way it is.

Important you do not ALT+TAB away from the game if a save is in progress. You may corrupt your city file. This is true even if you have asked for a save and quit.

I hope your laptop has good cooling. This game drives processors at 100% for a long time and you may get high temperature shut downs or slow downs.

So remove the -w option, and happy running in full screen. It makes sense to me as a programmer that the two would be mutually exclusive. Not polite of them not to issue a message though.

When I'm at home I use an external monitor- My last laptop (on Vista) ran the game at a custom resolution in a window with no issues. I've tried using the "-w" without the custom resolution on the new laptop as well- no luck there either.

There are too many voices in this often hi jacked thread. Would you mind starting a new topic, and lead off with a full description of uour machine and your problem, please?

Me too-ing a thread is often confusing when one backtracks.

My game works absolutely fine on windowed mode in Windows 7. Make sure the custom resolution you're running at is supported by your display. If you right click a remote area on the desktop and click 'screen resolution' your options for resolutions should show up, from 800x600 to your maximum supported resolution. Be sure that what you are trying to make the game run at is supported.

Well, I got it to work by starting the game through "Run" in the start menu and adding the "-w" there. Not sure why it didn't work in the shortcut target though.
