How to make a Grayscale Jpg?

First of all, if you want to generate terrain from an image, that image needs to be in bitmap (.bmp) format, not jpeg.

As for converting an image to grayscale... it's simple to do and a lot of image editing programs can do it. In GIMP, for instance, go to Image>Mode>Grayscale.

Actually I think ROFLYoshi is asking about generating a map from a terrain. If you already have your terrain you can load it into SC4 Mapper or SC4 Terraformer (I forget which you need), you can then export a greyscale image file for the terrain. You may need to adjust some things in a paint program, eg converting it to true greyscale (not sure as I haven't done it for a while). Be sure to test that your greyscale image works the way it is intended to (eg check sea levels etc by test importing it to the game), before you share it, and make a suitable config.bmp if needed.

Sorry for not replying sooner. If you have a greyscale map you could change the region size but you have to change both the greyscale map and the config bmp (the sizes are related to each other). Be careful, if you resize your greyscale too much you may lose a lot of detail. It's mainly useful for small adjustments.

I assume you mean 15x19 large cities? That's pretty big. That'd be 3841x4865 (I think) for the greyscale and 60x76 for the config.bmp. The greyscale image dimensions needs to be 256x the config dimensions, plus 1, and a large city is 4x4 pixels on a config.bmp. So for a 5x5 large city region that would be (5x256)+1=1281 in both dimensions for the greyscale.

Nope, you can use an 8-bit jpg to import into the game to render.  I've done it many, many times.2.gif
