Some Questions

Hi!

Just a few quick questions.

1. Can you dezone/demolish landfills?
2. Can an airport in a neighbouring city satisfy the commercial demand of a neighbouring city provided there are good transit links?
3. Can I build motorways underground a la big dig?

Thanks in advance,

Welcome to simtropolis!

 1. Yes, but only when there is no trash in it. You can do this by building a new place for the trash to go to and removing all connections. BE AWARE that there is a bug in the game that can cause the last 4 squares to be there for anything up to 100 years + !

2. No, but you can use something like the AIRPORT SHUTTLE (you will need to register at both the site and the exchange, the shuttle is in the pack along with many other interesting lots) to increase the demand in the city and create the imitation of sims traveling outside the city.

3. The boston central artery project is out there somewhere, i am afraid i do not have time to find it. Good luck with your questions

The "big dig" and similar lots all are visual lots which convert traffic to subway, then you use the subway to lead to the other entrance/exit.. I have seen several of these lots over the years and you could of course make your own Of course if that line crosses another subway line, they will all bleed together, so they are somewhat limited in their application.

EDIT: May as well add some other related info:

Ref: "airport shuttles" and their ilk, the above statements are correct.. a slight ellaboration.. A city MUST have an airport in it in order to gain the "commerce cap relief" .. the shuttles and etc are just airports modeled to look like something else (and fortunately rather smaller so you don't gobble a huge chunk of your small city tile for the airport)

The "airport" whatever form you decide on only serves one purpose as far as I know.. that is the raising of the "Cap" on commercial development. It is only needed if you actually are nearing a commerce cap. For some idiot reason, the "advisors" start screaming for  an airport WAAAAAY before you actually need one. Get one of the mod's that lets you see your cap % and don't bother with one untill you actually are up in the high percentages (90%+)  There are several versions of these available.

The "commuters" displayed in the query for the airport (or other substitutes) are simply the number of commercial lots in your city tile that have road access to the airport. If you have all commerce lots with access it is the same os a "count" of commerce capacity (which is available via other means as well)

1) You can build a waste to energy plant...depending on how big your landfills are you may need more than one, but they will take away the garbage and the zone will be empty and you can dezone it. Be patient though, I must warn you, it'll take time for those last squares to fully disappear!

2) As for the airport...the airport itself will only get the business and travelers from the city that it's in. However, when it boosts desirability for those offices and business and the like, it in turn can increase demands for the neighboring cities. Good luck!

Note about #1, bigthing is almost correct. The trash in the landfill decays, it does so according to how much trash there is in it. When it gets down to that last little bit, it can take seemingly forever. Whether or not that time is realistic is certainlly debatable, but that it happens that way isn't a "bug." There are actually a few mods around that can speed that up if you wish.

There is a bonafide bug though - any less-than-2-wide landfill e.g. 1 x m tiles in size won't decay at all. This is especially noticeable if you see what appears to be a 1/4 fragment of a trash heap all by itself. The simulator can't decay it (seems as if it rounds something down and sees zero trash to decay), but you can't simply dezone it either, because there is still actually some trash there. There is no fix for this, but a simple heads-up: don't dezone a 2x2 landfill until the entire thing is empty, even if the game lets you do so.

If you search "garbage" or "trash" or other such terms in STEX you'll find several other options, some radical, some cheating, some very realistic. Note that if you drop the WTE plant's funding to $0, it'll still burn trash, just not produce electricity... most consider that cheating, but that certainly doesn't mean you can't do it 3.gif. Pegasus has a couple of garbage docks for shipping garbage out - a realistic solution that doesn't pollute, unlike the WTE plant. He also has a couple of garbage "chutes" basically dumping garbage off the edge of the flat city. Realistic? To us, who live on a round planet, no. But the sims live in Columbus' worst nightmare... so you decide. 2.gif

There is a fix, just redo the landfill by adding "landfill lots" until you end up with an even set of 2x2 lots. It will then decay properly as I recall. I have run into this over the years. It isn't supposed to let you delete the last bit unless it is 2x2 but it can be done (ie it is "foolproof" but not damn foolproof) 4.gif I avoid the issue by building AND DELETING the lots in sets of  2x2

Just thinking on the airport issue, so added an edit to my above message.

To remove the last 2x2 block of landfill, zone a larger landfill around it and dezone it all in one go. It should remove it that way.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
