Obviously this is not the first time this has been discussed, so there are many threads of this nature. I'd refer you to THIS RECENT THREAD  on thie topic that covers the issue fairly well.

Microsoft Office is never a must.  You should, by this time, have figured out that there are other, less incestuous, office suites available.  What do you want to do in Microsoft Office that you can't do in Open Office?

What is it about Microsoft Office that you don't like, personally i don't like Open Office but that is probably because I'm used to the Microsoft one.

My principal objection to Microsoft Office is its price.  Furthermore, it doesn't run on my current operating system.  But I did have both of them up for a while when I was still an XP user.  They seem to be interchangable with only small differences in interface.

In principle, I object to any application package that has special deals with the Operating System, so morally I am also against MS' use of the package as a hooker for Windows.

I have the same $$ objection to Adobe's megapackage for graphics.  I use the GIMP, and have for a long, long time, even on XP.

I have a long and admiring relationship with the Free Software Foundation.  I don't think you should be obliged pay and pay and pay for things like word processors or graphics manipulation systems.

I also most strongly object to the takeover of the certification business by Microsoft.  They have made it impossible for people like myself to honestly get work because I haven't ponied up the bucks to get their latest piece of paper.  I have been in this business since before there were even degrees in computer science, programming and everything attached.  When I was at Queen's there was exactly one computer on campus, an IBM 1700 series machine, that was kept as a lab curiousity in the Electrical Engineering lab.

When all this certificaton stuff started, I did take the trouble to get certified.  I have a CCP which I partially got on the grandfather clause (ACM membership), but I did write the exam (cold) and passed it.  My version of this does not require recertification, but the AICCP got into that business shortly after.  Pfaugh!
