Custom Maps ~ Sizes

Alright, i've been into making custom maps for my own regions for some time now. I've already installed a 20 x 33 region and after a while of playing it i learned a few things about city planning and i want to start over. I like the large region size but the problem is the size of the region itself. I dont have a problem rendering the region or anything, it does take some time but that doesnt bother me. I've noticed that the when i move over to the eastern most tiles the screen locks for some time and the only way that i remember how to fix the problem is to restart the game. I just wont build on those tiles.

Anyways what i would like to know is what is the max region size, if there is one that is. I would like to make a region thats about 30 tall by 50 long or something around that. Also, i've seen some regions with a few of the tiles missing, when i make the config what color do i use to make some city tiles dissapear. I would like cut off the tiles that i cant access and wouldnt that make it easier on my computer when i start the game up.
