Leggo Your Eggo: There's a Waffle Shortage
by Julianne Pepitone

Kellogg is rationing its Eggo products due to flooding and equipment problems at two bakeries. The shortfall could last through mid-2010.

Better hoard your Eggos!

Grocery stores will be experiencing a shortage of the waffles until mid-2010 due to problems at two bakeries, a Kellogg's spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Flooding at an Atlanta bakery during heavy rains in October forced Kellogg, which makes Eggo products, to shut down production temporarily, said company spokesman Kris Charles. Plus, equipment at Kellogg's largest waffle facility, based in Rossville, Tenn., needs extensive repairs.

"We are working around the clock to restore Eggo store inventories to normal levels as quickly as possible," Charles said in an e-mail.

Remaining inventory will be rationed to stores across the country "based on historical percentage of business."

Production figures are confidential, Charles said, but Charles added that all lines are operational except for several lines at the Rossville plant.

Chad, a grocery manager at King Soopers in Denver who declined to give his last name, said his store is "seeing some shortage, but not much." A Kroger in Jackson, Miss., was also experiencing shortages, according to a manager in the frozen foods sections. At Fairway in New York City, Eggos were in full supply, however, according to a manager at the Red Hook location.

The production problems will also affect other Eggo products, including pancakes, syrup and other breakfast food. To alert customers, Kellogg has placed a warning to customers on top of its Eggo Web site and placed notices in some grocery stores.

Giggle.  I wouldn't touch any of that cardboard garbage on a bet.  I make my own waffles, and if I want jam with them, I use whatever jam is in the fridge along with genuine Ontario maple syrup.  I am a type 2 diabetic, so you can be sure that I don't indulge in these things very often.

There is too much hype by the manufacturers and too much laziness on the part of people who buy this junk.  You can enrich yourself by learning to cook.  Waffles are almost as easy as pancakes, but you do need a waffle iron.  Who will supply them for you after the ice age starts, hmmmm?

It takes a lot of work to riot. Just think of the energy expended destroying all that property 3.gif.

But seriously, this whole shortage incident just shows that it is wise to not put all the eggos in one basket (i.e. the site of the floods). Although I don't eat Eggo products myself, I hope that Eggo will take steps to ensure that this does not happen again, for the sake of their customers, and hence sales.

Not all of us are allowed to have waffle irons (or any electric heating appliance for that matter) as per the terms of our lease agreements.

Kellog is making Eggos for money so the wisest place to put the manufacturing plant would be where the total costs of manufacturing and shipping would be the lowest (and hence the highest proft for the Kellog company).  It is entirely possible that Kellog's costs for locating the plant somewhere the flood didn't happen could have represented a higher opportunity cost than Kellog suffering the losts profits from the plant damage.

Yes, it is a dorm, though I have heard of cases of people living in standard apartments being told they can't have electric heating appliances.

George Foreman Grills are electric heating devices so they aren't allowed either.

I dont see how they could not allow a waffle iron or elestric gridle ina standard apartment, i mean most of them would have electric stoves which are probably just as unsafe if improperly used.

    No toasters either?
