GLR In Avenue Problem

Here's the problem.  I build a city with GLR lines in all of the avenues just to see how it would work out.  I go to zone the areas around the GLR lines and the game WILL NOT let me zone my lots facing the GLR tiles.

I've tried holding down ctrl while I do it and everything but no matter what I do the zone tiles for residential or commercial will turn it's back to the GLR lines.  This wouldn't be such a huge problem if this wasn't a coastline I was building here.

What Am I doing wrong?

First of all, try the alt key instead of the ctrl key (Alt key does alternate rotations for zones, while control lumps the zone). If it still refuses to rotate, build an avenue where you want the GLR in Ave to go, zone, then place GLR in Ave on top of the Ave.

I don't know what to put here anymore.

I think the game treats GLR in avenue more like El-Rail than avenue. Of course the avenue functions, but it seems odd when using things like this and GLR on ped mall tiles rhat zoning is a bit...odd?

Just started using GLR in Ave today.  Had the same zoning problem as Andey.  "Alt" wouldn't force the zones to the Avenue either, it just went a different direction, but not facing the GLR/Ave lot.

Question is, to avoid the crash problems, the readme says not to plop any NAM items on top of existing structures.  If you draw out a standard Avenue first, then plop the NAM items in, doesn't it risk crashing?

Would it be better to Draw out a standard Avenue first so it levels the ground right, bull doze the Avenue, and then plop the GLR/Ave lots?  Could you zone then?  I hate to have to zone first then build the road network....and if it's a persistent problem, you can't rezone later without tearing up the roads again.

I couldn't find anything in the readme on this issue.

Update: Just tried the zones using a combination holding "Ctrl-Alt" together.  This forced the game to line it up to the GLR/Ave section.  I tried different street facings (N,S,E,W) and all seemed to work.  I'm not sure how this would work on diagonal avenues, though.

The only problem was it made any size zone a single zone.  So, if you were to zone a 10x10, it wouldn't add side streets, or have some zones face different streets.  It would be a single 10x10 zone.  The workaround is tedious: you have to zone each size zone you want individually.

What do you do for GLR stations when using GLR in road or avenue?

I use the RTMT 3.60 transit stations for GLR stations. Takes up less room. It'll take a little while installing and reading through the documentation, though, but well worth it. Search the STEX for it. I just tried it out for the first time today and works great!

Thanks. I was a dork, there was a thread further down the forum page that had that file and all the info!

And yes, I was really interested in the "tram in avenue" for the smaller amount of room it takes up. My last major city had GLR with the white tiles, and I put them between opposing one-way roads. I also left one tile on either side for bus stations and even subway, if needed. My next city will have the tram in avenue.

Just some handy tips when zoning:

"Alt" provides an alternative zoning direction.

"Ctrl" lets you to drag the lot as large as you want in one piece (useful when you want certain lots with larger footprints to grow).

"Shift" removes the side streets from the dragged zoning.

Hope this helps someone. Happy zoning! 2.gif
