Is there a way that I can make the game like another application, where the game doesn't eat the whole screen?

set the options to run 800x600 windowed in hardware mode... should make it smaller if your resolution is larger than that

My res. is one larger than 800x600. I set it to run as 800x600, and everything got bigger, and besides that it didn't change to like a normal window.

What's the difference between hardware and software modes?

software uses the software to render

hardware uses your video card
