Well, so I have this old clunker from 2003, and once i start getting swarms of skyscrapers on about a quarter of a big city tile, I start to lag. And I can't buy a new computer right now, either (I'm in high school, what do ya expect 3.gif

And guiltily, I have a whole Honest Ed's of plugins, which adds to the problem for sure.

But anyways, how can I maximize my performance on my computer? I don't mind a lack of Sims or Shadows, by the way.

Here are my specs:

Pentium 4 2.4 GHz

1.5 GB of RAM

GeForce 7600 GS, 512 MB

76  GB of Hard Drive space (my iPod is even bigger than that. meh.)

Windows XP Professional, 32-Bit

help, please 9.gif

Thank you.

That's not that bad of a clunker bro. I have a high-end system and SC4 still lags the same like you. So having a higher end system will not help.

Here's what I do... I leave the number of sims/ traffic alone because I think it looks cooler, but I minimize the amount of shadows and get rid of the clouds. I also leave the game on day only, no switching day to night, I also turn off all sound because for me the game would crash when changing tunes. I also turn off "u-drive-it" mode because I never use it. As far as your plug-ins folder.... what I did was separate each region that I have so that they have their own folders on a flash drive. Then within each region I also have folders for each town/ city. So when I play I just put in the folder for the city I am currently working on along with the region mods for rock/ beach/ water textures. Oh I almost forgot, those folders I mentioned before are the ones I swap in and out of the main plug-in folder. In the main plug-in folder I have the mods that I use throughout, the NAM, general parks/ landscaping plops, and plops/ growables that I use throughout. Ever since I've done this my game crashes A LOT less, and only when I have cities of ~200,000+. Hope that helps, any questions just ask.

The best way to improve performance if you have lots of custom content is to use Wouingame's Datpacker, available at the SC4D LEX: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=26 (You'll have to register to DL.)

It's an excellent program that packs your plugins folder into a few mega-dat files and speeds up loading and performance spectacularly, especially on older machines such as yours. This is a must-have, IMO.

You have to do some prep work to reorganize your docs/plugins, move mods to your C:.../plugins folder (all of which you should do anyway) and it only takes a few hours to get things straightened out if they aren't already, but once you run it, you'll never look back. Simply a great program.

You see, SC4 is a really old game. And because of that, it isn't multi threaded yet. Therefore, even if you have a quad core CPU but it's only running at 2.0 Ghz, ten that'd be worse than a single core running at the same speed. So, if you're looking to buy new hardware, get a graphics card, It'd do you much better.
