I just started downloading here and got a few regions. The problem is I can't build bridges across any of the rivers. This can even be a problem in the unmodified game. It always says something like "failed smoothing terrain." So my question is, is there a mod that can make the game MUCH less picky about where things go? And failing that, any other solution? Please, easy solutions only as I am nearly retarded when it comes to computer stuff - I can't figure out firefox and IE is the only browser I am able to use.

    Hi Matt,

first welcome to simtropolis! I'm sure you will find the solution to your problem in this endless pool of sc4 knowledge!

Since you encounter the problem in the unmodified game also, I think there is no need to check wheter you have a slope mod installed.

One problem might be that when drawing a road across a river you need to further strech out the road on both sides of the embankment. So don't just start dragging the road in one tile's distance to the river but give it some ten or so tiles on both sides. When drawing roads the game will adjust the terrain to create a conforming slope. Each type of road (or traffic network, generally spoken) has a "maximum" slope that it can scope with. If the scope is to steep, than the games will try to change the terrain altitude. If the terrain can't be changed, the line you're drawing turns red and you can't place the network.

Sometimes this even causes a problem with streets, avenues or highways despite no limitations for raising or lowering the terrain. In that case it helps to drag the network out further.

But possibly you can provide a picture of that problem: drag a road over a river, an hit the "PRNT" key to create a screenshot. Then post this image her. You might consider reading this thread as a starter ...

Bridges are no problem, but sometimes you have to take a run at them, especially if one shore is lower than the other. Diagonals are out unless you use the diagonal bridge mod (with great care and attention).

As was said above, sometimes you have to take a vary long approach. There are engineering considerations on the approach.
