5376. And it's 24 related. I didn't see that coming. 3.gif

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

5377. Well, nice depends on your perspective. The mix between left aligned and semi-centred (to far to the left) makes it look odd.

5383. I wonder what external factors influence the post rate, and if it's possible to give an estimate for the post rate given values for these factors.

5384 - Real life? This is that time of the year everyone is studying, I guess that could be a reason. (if that is true this thread should pick up anytime soon)

5385. I think that at least you need to take into account timezones, and during which times who is on-line. The day of the week is also important: I post more during weekend, than during school-days.

I'm sure studying is the reason as well. Most of our members are in some kind of schooling. Not me of course. I may take a class or two this fall though. Depends on my financial situation.

5388. Muck, that might be true, but I don't think everyone is in their final year. Or do US schools feature exams every year?

Usually, yes, there are exams at the end of every year. But I know high schools around here won't be out for another couple of weeks, so there might not be exams going on there... just colleges and universities.

And certainly, yes, I'm sure whim is a factor.

Wow! Over half-way there!

So what are your opinions on flying buttresses?

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

No mention of being halfway there is legitimate until this song is invoked:

Aesthetically speaking, they're one of the less flattering elements of "Gothic" churches. All skeletal and whatnot.

Although, their purpose is structural. Gotta brace the roof somehow...

I personally like flying buttresses. I think they give buildings an airier and fancier atmosphere. I have seen photographs of flying buttresses on stadium-sized mega-churches in Asia and I think that they give those churches a futuristic vibe.

Here is an example:

megachurch.jpg

These do not look like a traditional flying buttresses but they serve the function of them and have the same basic shape. I cannot find the picture of the megachurch with the rounder flying buttresses but I think that it was in South Korea.

EDIT: I also like flying buttresses in Gothic Architecture. With ornate spires, they have an aesthetic effect that I find pleasing and often awe inspiring.
