3664. Some knocked over trees, many broken windows, and a lot of rain. But usually they happen anywhere in the country, but here. Worst I heard of in my area is that a village 6km away flooded after heavy rain, but that village happens to be build on the lowest spot in the area (-4.5m if I'm not mistaken), so it could have been predicted.

Well, remember what I said. Wind gusts reported up to 65-70 mph. 70 mph is the threshold for a category 1 hurricane. So, if it looks like a hurricane blew through here... well, that's not all that inaccurate a description of the storm, severity-wise.

Though, it was a nor'easter, which is neither cyclonic nor tropical in origin, so meteorologically speaking it was something entirely different.

Some other personal notes:

- the power goes out a few times a year here. Usually it's just for a couple hours, other times it's the sort where it goes out in the evening and comes back on in the wee hours of the morning after everyone's gone to sleep. We have had a 24+ hour blackout once before, a few years ago on Labor day weekend it went out friday night and due to widespread outages and ours being local and low priority, we weren't back online until sunday morning. This was our first 48+ hour blackout.

- since we're on a well, which requires electicity to pump, no power for us also essentially means no running water. What's sitting in the tank when the power goes out is all we've got until it comes back on. Solution for long blackout? Go with buckets back to the little creek behind our house. Not very suitable for washing and unsuitable for drinking, but at least we can flush the toilets with it.

- the septic tank backed up into the shower downstairs. My father and I had to plug the drain so it wouldn't continue to do so, then grab buckets and bail it out. This has happened before, actually. We technically could have sued the previous owners of the house for not telling us about this problem, but we didn't.

- we had fires going all day sunday and monday. As did a lot of people. You drove around here, you could smell wood burning from inside your car. Our living room still smells like soot.

- we got MacGuyverish about it, though. Hung the tea kettle above the fire using a wire coat hanger and made coffee. Had the oven rack hung from the coat hanger in the back and resting on the andirons in the front and cooked chicken. Reheated pizza by holding it above the flame on the giant barbecue spatula... didn't roast mashmallows, though.

- the temperature sunday and monday hung between 35-45 degrees fahrenheit. Got a little chilly at night, but we were able to keep our milk from going bad by storing it outside on the deck. Anything else perishable in the fridge or freezer got thrown out this morning, though, as it all went bad. My mother is out getting groceries as I type this...

- today it was sunny and almost hit 60 degrees. I imagine anyone who still doesn't have power is having an easier time of it today.

Sounds like your family made the best of it, Duke. I've had marginally good luck when it comes to outages. I've lived in my current abode for about 20 months or so. It went out once for about a half hour. My last place I lived at for nearly four years and the power went out a few times but never for more than hour.

In 1998 or so, we had a heck of a storm, with 70-80 mph winds. ( And a tornado touched down on Mt. Washington... unheard of) I lived at my parent's house at the time. The power went out overnight, but the rest of the street was out for a week. Some neighbors had to hook up a refrigerator in our driveway, so they could all access it without coming in our kitchen.

3669. I'm glad I haven't been in weather like that.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Well, you did announce that you would be gone for a few days. So nothing seemed awry.

Interesting, I've always said "summer vacation" and "Christmas break". Of course, the latter is politically incorrect and so you'll often hear "holiday break" instead. Which is amusingly redundant if you use the British definition of the word "holiday".

3689. Although we in Australia tend to use both the US word and the English word for something, vacation has never really caught on.

3691 - We use vacations, summer vacation, winter break, March break and occasionally summer break however we use vacation more than holiday. (See WestJet Vacations WestJet is Canada's Southwest and the vacations are charter flights to the Caribbean and back)
