Actually, I use the delete function all the time. By far the most common reason is when I compress GIF (or BMP) images into PNGs to have a smaller filesize... this means creating a new file and it is thus quite counterproductive if I don't then delete the old one.

In a similar vein, if I download something in a ZIP archive, generally I'll unzip the contents and then delete the ZIP file, since it'd be redundant to keep it.

There are other causes, too. My collection of images and whatnot is huge. I don't remember every last thing that's in it, so I don't necessarily know when I save something that I don't already have it. Sometimes I will discover that I have two copies of the same file under two different names - in which case I will of course delete one. Sometimes I will recognize that I already have and image but save it anyway and delete the old one - if, for instance, the new one is higher res or higher quality, or the old one was watermarked or censored/edited and the new one is not. And if I have to edit something in order to make it suitable for posting on the web, I will delete the edited version once I've posted it.

And occasionally, I will, actually, decide "you know what, I don't need this, it's a waste of hard drive space" and delete it. Of course, in such circumstances, those things are not completely gone since they remain on my external backup. For instance, I still have all my plugins and saved cities/regions from SC4 on my external hard drive despite the fact that that game has been uninstalled from my computer for some time.

...and I suppose you could also make the argument that the routine automatic deletion of cookies, cache, and browsing histoty also counts, but now we're picking nits.
