Welcome to the New Patrician Showcase.

Some of you may be familiar with the old Patrician Showcase. The old Patrician Showcase was closed out with this message, stating, in brief, that due to a computer failure, all of the flagship regions of the showcase were lost, but a 10-month-old backup was discovered, which was loaded into my present computer, purchased on September 1, 2009.

The 10 month gap in development has radically altered Patian County, so much so that I believe it warrants a new start, a new beginning, and a new city journal. It is due to this that this city journal, the New Patrician Showcase, is now here, being the successor to the old one, and continuing the legacy of it.

This city journal will broaden the Patrician Showcase's scope to new regions, which may be built in the future, in addition to its flagship region, Patian County. It will also feature experiments and concepts in action I will be testing out.

So, I will leave you with this teaser snapshot of a new city, New Axun, before we get rolling here:

New City, hmm, I vaguely remember a New Axun already being build, I fear I'm undergoing the same as Chancellor Tristan in Follomer.. As long as I don't end up insane and trying to take over the world.

Ehrm, back to the picture: Nice highway, but why is there a sign board build after the intersection?

Huzzah! The Patrician Showcase returns! I shall change my subscription over to this one.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Sorry to hear about the loss, but sometimes a sorta-fresh start is a fantastic way to go through and do things better than you ever did. 9.gif Makes a good CJ even better. In the end, I reckon you'll feel strangely grateful for this turn of events. 4.gif

    NEW AXUN

    REPLIES:

Chptrk: All was not lost, but enough of it was to warrant closure. I'm glad you think it had a good start.

Korot:  1) No, you're not undergoing parallel universe displacement. There was an Axun in the old showcase, which was lost. This New Axun commemorated it's importance.

    2) The sign board is a direction sign 3.gif.

    Crazychickensc12: Thank you.

AstroNelson: Yes, it has returned, and is back stronger than ever.

    Schulmanator: Glad you're optimistic.

Zelgadis: I completely agree with that.

    Ecoba: I'm sure as well.

    CrazyArchitect: That's the spirit.

Mikeaut1: I'm glad you're following this one from the start.

TmiguelT:  1) Of course I'm using the RHW. Would it be a Patrician Showcase without it?

    2) Interchanges are coming. None are particularly great in this update, but I've got a few ideas for future re-development of lost areas....

Wow. Thanks for the vast outpouring of support over the past 3 days. I shall do my utmost to live up to anticipations of both myself and viewers, taking up the challenge of betterment of regions in this city journal, which is merely just beginning.

We shall start today, as promised, with New Axun. New Axun was named after the old Axun in commemoration of its loss. Here is a regional overview:

    18-4.png

Continuing the terraced seafront of North Riverton, eastern New Axun is a mass of skyscrapers in transition to flat, higher land. In the below picture north is to the left:

    1-173.jpg

Continuing along the main avenue, we encounter a country club, serving the rich folks of the city of more than 100 000 residents. And, yes, I did download the SFBT tree replacement mod:

    2-139.jpg

You may have noticed the intersection on the upper right. Driving on the divided road northbound leads us to this, the first median widening of it's kind ever in Patian County:

    3-107.jpg

Alas, it is not for long. Constraints of the shoreline demand a tightening after a few hundred meters, next to an upper-class district containing a commercial distribution facility in its midst:

    4-88.jpg

The avenue leads to a roundabout with an interesting feature -- a World War II bomber, purchased from the United States and hauled to Patian County:

    5-63.jpg

Below is a shot of development in New Axun, creeping relentlessly higher as more people pour in to the new city:

    6-47.jpg

Cutting through all of this is a brand-new RHW-6C freeway, intersecting a main avenue by a partial cloverleaf interchange, fully signed:

    7-37.jpg

The masts are explained by a new mod which uses a Type 21 exemplar to automatically place them in the median. They're actually quite pretty at night time:

    17-5.jpg

The next interchange to the north on the freeway is a simple diamond interchange. Nothing much is to be said about this one:

    8-30.jpg

The last intersection in New Axun is with another freeway, which terminates to the west, via a rather classic volleyball interchange:

    9-22.jpg

And here is the termination to the west, featuring a Partial-Y interchange, using Jeronij trees...:

    10-18.jpg

And for the first time ever, Big Dig lots, utilizing the subway system to build tunnels where none could be built before:

    11-13.jpg

On the low but detectably trafficked freeway, an odd ramp connects a northern housing area to the freeway, volleyball interchange, and consequently the rest of the city:

    12-13.jpg

More importantly it is connected to where the jobs are by a rail system, the northern interchange shown here:

    13-11.jpg

The line snakes southward, interfacing with a rail station before taking a typical FAR-like 18 degree turn:

    14-12.jpg

    15-7.jpg

And then sneaking under an avenue and out of the city limits:

    16-5.jpg

Well, the necessarily large update on New Axun is over, and next time plans will be revealed for parts east of the city, and also a video 2.gif.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

    LAKE POINT

    REPLIES:

Archean: Yes, trains. Thanks for your comments, and i do seem to have a lot of fun work ahead of me...

Chptrk:  1) The city is pretty detailed, because my style is to work on things district-by-district, according to natural boundaries. For instance, a district could be bounded by a highway, commercial zone, park, and an avenue.

    2) Great Transportationer? If I get a trixie award this year, I'll remember that 3.gif.

Korot: I prefer to not develop everything at once, but rather to leave room for cross-city development, so things don't look harsh on the regional map. Eventually all will be filled up, as happened in the Greater Terran Region.

TmiguelT:  1) I didn't say "no interchanges". I said that they wouldn't be particularly great, which is to say nothing earth-shattering.

    2) I am pleased that this has already inspired one person...

    Simbourgeois: I agree with that.

Well, after about 5 days the New Showcase is back. It is a longer wait than I had anticipated (been rather busy), but I am confident things will be back in full motion in a few days.

In this spirit, let's move on to Lake Point, the city tile north of New Axun, and not any less developed. Below is a regional overview of the area, showing some preliminary developments elsewhere:

    1-177.jpg

I'll start off with a mosaic of the entire central city, showing off its density and rather orderly patterns:

    2-143.jpg

And an overview of the entire city, displaying the beauty of the point area with the due-north freeway acting as a container on the development of downtown Lake Point:

    3-111.jpg

I'd also like to show to you an area which I find an oddity -- 6 of the same type of building all in the same block:

    4-91.jpg

Ordinarily this would be cause to demolish them, but they seem to go well together, so they will stay. It also looks strikingly similar to some buildings I saw in SimCity 3000...

Also note the subway station. The station is more than it seems -- the immense subway system underneath all of these eastern Lake cities is the blood of the city -- without them, the area would cease to function and grind into gridlock.

Moving on to the east, there exists some residential structures adjacent to a rail line, also connected to the outside world by two rather simple, but elegant, interchanges:

    5-66.jpg

I would ask you especially to click on the above picture for full resolution, and pan around. Examining it in detail reveals a lot more than a simple scan. Look closely at the flexible underpasses (FLUPs), as well as the passenger rail stations. Also note the many cemeteries (I could use all of them for a halloween special update...).

Up north, the rail line makes an S-curve to avoid carving through existing development. Noise-deflecting walls are also prevalent here, partly shielding stadium crowds from the near-constant noise of busy rail traffic:

    6-50.jpg

I confess the wall does look a bit odd, but walls in Patian County are like the Great Wall of China -- small walls are built, which are gathered into one big, long one over time.

In the northern reaches of the city, where sea closes in on freeway and squeezes development out, there exists a Partial-Y interchange. This is connected to a partial diamond south of the interchange, so on the whole it is complete.

Below is the tunnel going under the freeway (yes, more Big Dig lots 9.gif):

    7-39.jpg

And here is the entire interchange. East is up in the pictures above and below:

    8-32.jpg

In this area is also a commercial area, with no road access to the rest of the city. The only way to get there is either walking thriugh the woods or passenger rail. Naturally the station is quite busy every day:

    9-23.jpg

Southeast of here is a rail interchange, linking an east-west line to the main one. The city at the other side has yet to be built:

    10-19.jpg

And lastly, as promised, a video showcasing Lake Point in motion:

    THE NEW CREEKMOUTH REGION

    REPLIES:

    Jacqulina: Thank you.

TmiguelT: I appreciate it. Glad you like my use of the big dig lots.

Korot: There was a high demand for cemeteries, and I simply decided to place them all near each other.

Simbourgeois: Yes, traffic is quite dense.

In the past two weeks, a lot has happened in Patian County. Firstly, we'll look at the regional overview:

    49e32bca.png

And before I begin showcasing the new Creekmouth and East Creekmouth, a new interchange is here to show, a partial-cloverleaved three-level stacked roundabout interchange:

    1-185.jpg

    And now Creekmouth:

    2-151.png

You may remember Creekmouth from way back in the old Patrician Showcase. Since then it hasn't grown very much, but now it finds itself as the connection point of the vital east lakeside artery with the rest of the network. From Lake Point, the freeway sheds its veneer of an RHW-6C, and meanders over to the east, all the while serving an avenue via a parclo interchange:

    3-118.jpg

And here is that parclo interchange:

    4-96.jpg

The freeway later goes straight to a bridge and connects with a Maxis highway. Below is the east side of the commercial development, showing the avenue and passenger rail stations:

    5-71.jpg

And now we proceed east to the aptly-named East Creekmouth:

    6-54.png

The avenue running from east to west along the Creekmouth region begins its toll stretch here with this toll booth, and transitions to an RHW-4 shortly thereafter:

    7-43.jpg

Below is a snapshot fo the trumpet interchange connecting East Creekmouth to the avenue, and some of the massive rediential development which characterizes the city tile:

    8-36.jpg

    9-26.jpg

And lastly, a shot of a flexible underpass (FLUP) passing underneath a rail line while a train passes above:

    10-22.jpg

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

    EAST NEW AXUN

    REPLIES:

    Chptrk: Thank you.

Archean:  1) Yes, you picked them out. And I would like to say that they were a good choice.

    2) Franklin will grow at its own pace, but I can guarantee that there will come a time when the total population will be 100 000+.

TMmguelT:  1) Glad you like my transportation system.

    2) It's spelled "Patricius", not "Patricious".

We'll be skipping East Lake Point for now, since that is still in early development. Instead, we'll be going southward still to East New Axun, outlined in yellow:

    1-190.png

As you may be aware from the New Axun update, a freeway in the northern reaches of the city begins at the coast at a partial-Y interchange, and progresses to the east. This is the other side of the progression, a Semi-Directional T interchange:

    2-156.jpg

The freeway veering south is the main freeway, and comprises the southern half of the beltway encompassing the centre of East New Axun. This is the one we will follow.

Farther down, the freeway enters into another free-flowing interchange, this time of a trumpet variety:

    3-123.jpg

Before this picture was taken, the interchange actually had an interesting history. Originally built as a partial cloverleaf as one of the few street-to-freeway interchanges on the ring road, it quickly became congested, with red lines on the congestion screen to prove it.

Furthermore, traffic mostly used the ramps in only one direction per commute, with some of the traffic using the other ramps to go in the other direction. Had it not been for the "some" traffic, a partial-Y would have sufficed. But it was decided to simply upgrade the parclo to a trumpet, which to this day has proven adequate.

Consequently, this is one of the few free-flowing interchanges in Patian County that connects to a surface street.

After narrowing itself from 8 to 2 lanes, the freeway makes an elegant curve to the east, and soon thereafter encounters another avenue. This time a partial cloverleaf with rounabouts is enough to stave off congestion:

    4-100.jpg

Next, the ring road is the main route in another trumpet interchange, this time of a lower-capacity freeway which goes to southern portions hitherto undeveloped:

    5-75.jpg

It curves once again to the north, and intersects an avenue with the only interchange on this quarter of the road, which is in this case a simple diamond:

    6-58.jpg

Below is a more zoomed-out look, showing how both freeway and eastern housing development are sandwiched inbetween the center and the edge of the city limits:

    7-46.jpg

Making an S-curve to the north, the median widens to multiple tiles in width, the freeway also widening, in preparation for the terminus at itself, a Semi-Directional T interchange:

    8-39.jpg

But the ring road isn't there all is to see here. Below is an overview of the entire city, showing the ring road enclosing the city center in what is reminiscent of a cell membrane:

    9-28.jpg

Within that city center, there are residential and commercial zones, making it a far cry from a central business district, but still a central city. Below is a snapshot of one of the boundaries between housing and commercial offices:

    10-23.jpg

Northeast of here, there is a sight not easily visible from the air, but is quite significant. If you look closely, you can see a cooling tower for a fission power plant peeking out from the skyscrapers:

    11-14.jpg

Next to the eastern diamond interchange, there are rather interesting apartment buildings. This area is a residential district:

    12-15.jpg

And lastly, a snapshot from the south of the city, showing the major league stadium next to the parclo interchange:

    13-12.jpg

    That's all for now.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

Since I somehow didn't comment on the previous update:

In the second to last picture, I see three large train station right after each other, but I doubt it is such a busy stretch of rail that it is necessary to have three stations following so quickly on each other.

    And now to this update:

How on earth is it possible to have such a dense city centre, with such large buildings, with so much empty space and hardly any low density areas? And the highway doesn't go from 8 to 2 lanes, but to 4 lanes (2+2=4), but why does the main highway actually turn south when it joins with the east going highway on the other side of the city? Most thorough traffic would just go right ahead, bypassing the city, and not take the turn south, around the city.

    And that concludes this reply.

    Regards,

    Korot
