Traffic Jams in Map Corners.

I hope I can explain this...I'm not great at image capture.

I'm sure people have built sizable cities in proximity to each other...and traffic can become something of an issue.

My issue is that traffic jams up in the corners of my maps, often creating a "ring" of jammed roads and rails through the 4 cities that meet at any given corner.

I've tried removing connections close to corners, only to find the traffic will climb as much as a third of the way along a map edge to continue this "loop".

And even more frustrating...Is that there doesn't appear to be a "destination"....when doing a check on the traffic flow...most of it "enters" the city on one edge only to "exit" the other...on all 4 cities...where do these sims sleep?

Avenues, Highways...it seems as though volume increases with capacity, so simply upgrading roads is not an option.

It's really frustrating when you have worked hard to ease traffic problems in the city itself, only to have the 4 corners of the map choked with "red".

I don't know if a newer NAM has addressed this (using an older NAM and invested too much to upgrade)

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

I've heard very good things about Simulator Z. I haven't downloaded it, but I believe it has some kind of pathfinder thingamajig, which probably means it eliminates problems with pathing, so every commute has a start and an end. I dunno, I haven't downloaded it and I have the same problem as you, so you'll just have to test for yourself what works.

You have discovered what is officially called the "Eternal Commuters" problem. Years ago I built out the "Berlin" region ( over 10 million pop. ) not knowing what was behind the problem. After I learned what the problem is I looked at fixing that region and saw it was too much work and just moved on to new regions and did not set up my connections to allow this problem to happen.

Basically you can not allow your sims to go around in a circle back to there starting city. As you have seen they just keep on commuting. There is no game fix. Make your city connections either north&south or east& west.

If you do venture into a side connection just do not let that connection connect to thru traffic. I do this all the time . I wiil set up a nice industrial park and send workers across to work there.

With practice you can make what looks like completed roads or highways with park road pieces in the middle and cover it with large trees to give the allusion of a continuous road. Its still nice to give what appears to be an interstate road or rail system.

Go over to sc4 devotion and look in their WIKI or the CAM manuel page 6 talks about this problem.

This is a rather well-known problem with SC4.. if you do a search on "commuter loops" you'll find lenghty discussions about it and what causes it. I think it is discussed in some form on virtually every major SC4 site. The jist of avoiding it is not to allow tight loops in the corners of cities.. keep connections toward the center of tiles, limit the connections so they tend to be EW in one tile and NS in the adjacent tiles. Force traffic toward the city center before coming back toward adjacent tiles. Don't allow "corner shortcuts".
