A city below the water level

After a lot of experiments with the new tools teirusu discovered i finnaly made a small city below the water level: New Holland

/idealbb/files/nNL01.JPG
As you can see it is just a small city protected by dykes

Ofcource a city like this can be without windmills
/idealbb/files/nNL02.JPG
There need to be windmills in order to pump the water out and ofcource for the power.

Ofcource New Holland can't have grids
/idealbb/files/nNL03.JPG

And now to prove that the city really is below the water:

/idealbb/files/nNL04.JPG
Everything below the water is stange green but where the normal water level is the map is blue

Here is the above view of a dike
/idealbb/files/Nedboven.JPG
You can see that the water is here about 1/2 tile high

And the underground view
/idealbb/files/NedOnder.JPG
The bottom of the water is as high as the land in the polder

And you can see the diffirence in height in the region view to
/idealbb/files/nNL05.JPG

So what do you think? Now we can create completely water lanscape's. But there are still some problems like the fact that the water doesen't save.

The city is very nice...

Great region, it's nice to see some real Dutch polder regions!!! It really makes me feel home as a Dutchman.

Well the point is: Holland exist for over 30% of reclaimed land, that sits lower than the sealevel. So it makes him feel kinda like home playing with that map.

The reason i made this city is ofcource because i'm dutch.

It is very irritating to fill all the water because the water isen't saved. One time i made the water get to high and it destroyed the city. I hope there a way will be found to save the water. It doesen't go away during the game so it is stored somewhere.
This is just a test polder. Now i know how to make them much bigger polders should be possible.
But using them in a real region isen't quite handy as all the large bodies of water wil have to be filled over and over again. And i still haven't found a way to make lower land fill like i want it to.

    What does polder mean?
And hopefully with the next expansion your issues will be solved.

Equinox, a polder is a piece of land, which is gained from the sea.
To protect the land being flooded from the daily high tides, you have to build seven to ten meter high dams (dykes). These dykes prevent the water from seeping into the land. So the land fells dryer and can be finally used for settlement or farming purpose.

I really wish Maxis would have incorperated the rain in lakes and have had them work. This city seems very interesting. I've done things along the same line as this before. However, if you make a huge mountain and then make enough rain to go up to the top then lower the terrain, a weird effect happens where the water floats in midair and doesnt really exist. It's really weird. I think maybe this bug could be used at intresting effect.

You can find the rain and lake tools on teirusu's site

Here is a picture of a real polder
    /idealbb/files/dijken.gif
Sorry the picture is in black and whit but it was the best one i found.

    /idealbb/files/nNL07.JPG
This is what happens if the water gets over the dike.
Under water life strangly still goes on.

You can even drive under water
    /idealbb/files/nNL06.JPG
Most of the roads are still there but some of the tiles are replaced by white squares.
You can even see new building that are build under water. They can hold their breath long<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/22.gif>.

Ofcourse you can use the rain tool to make other thing like what i did in this city.
    /idealbb/files/Dms00.jpg

    /idealbb/files/Dms01.jpg
People that come to this peacfull town don't immediatly know it but something on the horizon looks strange.

    /idealbb/files/Dms02.jpg
Then they see it, its a giant hydroelectric dam. Whit real water behind it

    /idealbb/files/Dms03.jpg
You can see that a giant lake made whit the rain tool lies behind the dam

On the dam are the acces tunnels
    /idealbb/files/Dms04.jpg
You can also see the power lines that take the power produced here to the rest of SimNation

On the other side of the dam the creator of the dam build a statue of himself
    /idealbb/files/Dms05.jpg
The land extention where the statue stands on is actually a key element of the design whitout it filling the lake would be very difficult. I also build a marina here to see if boats would sail on the lake. But that doesen't happen the boats always stay at sea level ant can't sail on higher water bodies.

On the height map you can see how the lake lies in the mountains
    /idealbb/files/Dms06.jpg

On the next picture you can see the water diffirence
    /idealbb/files/Dms07.jpg

And in underground view you can see how deep the lake is
    /idealbb/files/Dms08.jpg
You can also see where the old water level was (where the waves are)

So what do you think? A lot op people wanted dams in their cities and now that is possible. But the biggest problem still is that you can't save the water.

Nice work with that City below Waterlevel. I was going to do that too, just to find out , if it was possible, and then on the way I changed my mind and did this Dam here,to furnish the Power , needed for a big Neighbor City in Nexis. As you can clearly see here, these installations are below water level too.

Mrbisomm's dam is also impressive. However, the cliff has a nasty effect, but you can't do anything against it...
All this is pointless, but its' very nice...

There is no real advantage but who doesen't want to have a big dam in his city? And mabey the polders are more for the dutch<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif>.
If you like can post a shot tutorial on making a dam.
I also tried a much larger project but i can't fill the water bofies in right, I can't remeber anymore how many times i destroyed that city.

The Rain/Water Tool is a tool that can be downloaded from the Mod section, and you will find it in god-mode with all the other landscaping tools.
With this tool , one can make water on higher elevations, but which cannot be safed yet though , once leaving,  So everytime you enter the city, you have to make it rain again.<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/23.gif>
