Greater map size

OK so I'm pretty new to this game and want to start my own region. I'm done whit practice and want to move on BUT. i don't want a standard small 1024x1024 region. Every time i create a bigger one it seems not to be working so i have been looking around a bit on how to enlarge the region size, however whiteout any success. i searched for some tutorials but didn't find any clear ones. so now I'm asking if someone could link me to a clear tutorial or explain it to me since I'm really breaking my head on this.
