I love making big cities, but when i come to lay subway i always lay the stations first, in places that i beleve are appropriate. Then after i have layed them, i join them to the line. This takes a long time and they just end up going all over the place, there are also alot of junctions as i connect each inividual station, example:-P (S=station)

                              ------S

                       S--/

                        !

S--------------------------------------------S

This would continue in that fasion all around the network.

My Question is:-

Is this a bad way of doing it? Does it cause congestion?

Also would this be a bad way of doing it?

         !                    !                  !                 !

S---------------------------------------------------S

             !          !                !          !

There is no 'bad' way to do it so long as you have stops where your sims need to go.

I typically place subways with a central ring system, and an outer ring system, then join these up with 'spokes' so it looks much like a bicycle wheel. This works well for how I plan my cities with most people either heading into or away from the centre of the map. The rings allow more options for sims if they wish to travel around the edges of the map.

In my opinion, seems more realistic the first way you do it, I've never seen the second one in any real city. If you are concerned with your subway network realism, try here, there's a compilation of maps of subways, trams and light rails from all over the world; that can show you how are junctions placed and this kind of things.
