Effeciency?

As I was looking through some of the STEX stuff, I started to wonder; are junctions more effcient than roundabouts? Take the avenue junctions for example. The roundabouts have improved traffic capibilities, while the typical junction saves space. So, does the improved traffic flow offset the wasted space? Or is the typical junction better due to the room for additional development? I'm kind of torn between the two, so I thought maybe some addtional feedback would be helpful.
Thanks, Faded Glory. 31.gif

build your roundabout when the traffic hits the red on said intersection...

you are only losing 4 tiles to put in a roundabout... it is better to have a decent traffic flow then a stifled economy due to high commute times

our world is a simcity

well roundabouts keep traffic flowing at all times while you have to wait at a light at a typical intersection...sims dont like to wait lol

all roundabouts have done for me in that situation is hurt(I don't use them except for looks.)

if you have simulator Z installed, the sims use a roundabout like a traffic light! but I like the benefits more than the cons of the simulator. in other words, roundabouts don't really help as much, they just are good for looks(at least in my opinion 4.gif .)

they may help, however, the just do little good as a replacement for congested intersections(in my experience. LOL.)

Hope this helps.

I actually made a thread like this; someone tested this for me and proved that travel through junctions is better than roundabouts because you actually travel more tiles, so I would says use junctions: they save space and have better commute times which means that they're better for traffic.

Here's the link to the aforementioned thread with the similar dilemma I had: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=106061&highlight_key=y

I hope I helped!

Ironzer... Thanks for posting the link. I thought me and my random trails of thought were alone in simtropoland, but I guess not. I guess that solves that issue, but I'm still left wondering which style I prefer. Grrr such hard descions32.gif

Oh well, thanks for answering. If anyone else still wants to add their two cents worth that's fine by me.

You can demolish the central green tiles in an Avenue roundabout and use that for construction. I usually put a library in there.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

yea i guess that would make them better because you sorta gain back the space taken by the wider roundabouts.....

Well, in real life, roundabouts are designed to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street. However, they are not so good at handling heavy traffic, which is what we have here. Roundabouts are probably not the best option as was pointed out with simulator z as the distance travelled is greater and you have to yield to other vehicles (instead of waiting for the light, which negates that benefit.

In the real world, it depends on the situation, and no two cases are alike.

In SC4, I don't know that it makes a difference. You'd have to ask the guys who programmed the roundabouts (NAM team).
