Did you know that beer is the thrid most consumed beverage in the world, behind water and tea?  Well now you know!

The Czechs consume the most beer per capita in the world, its second only to water!  In the USA, beer is #4, behind water, soft drinks and tea.

This thread was made to discucuss all things beer related.  Feel free to discuss it, post your favorites and whatever.  Just remember the site rules and whatnot.

Now a couple videos.  Have you ever heard the beer song?  If not, here's your chance!

And then there's the less famous "beer is good" song:

I like my beer to be ale.  It has to be thick, and dark.

This is my favourite commercial ale:

oldpec.jpg

It's like gravy! It's worth adding that there are far better, independent alternatives. I prefer the ones that I've never heard of before, made round the back of someone's farm house in deepest rural England.

If I were to name a favourite lager it would be this one:

Budvar_UK.JPG

Am I going to get sued for showing this picture on a Canadian based website? 9.gif

I'm surprised to see you have Boddingtons all the way over there! Although we in the UK would put it into the 'draught bitter' category of beer 4.gif

No matter how hard I try I can never seem to get over seeing European lager brands described as beer 4.gif

Thinking about all this is making me really thirsty for a beer, but as it's not yet noon I guess I'll have to have another cup of coffee!

Beer would also be in my personal top three beverages;

1.Coffee

2.Beer

3.Water (but only from the tap!)

That looks strangly similar to the Czechvar I posted above.  Perhaps its the same thing yet called something different?

Those Czechs... They consume more beer per capita than any other person on earth!  (Only behind water).

Easy Bakes:  Never been a fan of light beer myself, but I have to agree Bud Light is pretty good for a lighter brew.  I've never tried it with lime.

Does the Budweiser from Europe taste the same as the USA brand?

Where I am from has a neat secret, down the road there is a little town named Shiner which has a operational 100 yr.old brewery making beer of the same name that is pretty common throughout the US now. When I was a little kid my family took a tour of the factory, I would love to go back now that I am old enough to try some samples.

Yes it's the exact same thing!  Only in the US and Canada (I think) is it called Czechvar!

This is from the Budweiser Budvar website:

    Disputes concerning registered trademarks

stit.jpgThe history of disputes regarding the registered trademark of Budweiser Budvar dates back to the beginning of the last century. For decades, the representatives of one of the large american breweries tried to purchase from Budweiser Budvar the rights to its trademarks, first of all only for the territory of the USA. They managed to do this before the start of World War II. with the aim of attaining registered trademarks for Budweiser Budvar in other countries and the representatives of American brewery still continue with their activities today.

Budweiser Budvar has to defend its historical rights to the registered trademarks against legal attacks from the Anheuser-Burch company in more than 40 legal disputes and a further more than 70 administrative proceedings currently before patent offices throughout the world. The majority of legal decisions confirm the rights of Budweiser Budvar to its registered trademarks. Recently, Budweiser Budvar achieved important victories in the legal trademark disputes, for example, in Great Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Greece, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and New Zealand.quote>

Sounds quite angry doesn't it! As I understand it, American Bud stole the name then wouldn't let Budvar use it in America.  In the UK though the two Budweisers are sold along side each other.  Some people get confused, until they taste the difference! I prefer Budvar anyday! In fact, after posting above I went straight out and got a couple of bottles.

HamsterTK: See above.  It's in another league! (a higher league 4.gif

It's really funny to see supermarket brand beer, especially so plainly labeled like it was a pack of toilet paper or something 3.gif

I guess we have the same thing in the form of Keystone light , $15 for a 30-can box.

I don't actually drink alcohol at all. The taste to me is vile...wines especially. With wine, my usually good tastebuds can't distinguish between any sort of wine, be it red or white or cheap or expensive. It just all has that same horrible taste and smell.

With alcohol itself..I once dowsed a cocktail, but it was so watered down with fruit that I never tasted the alcohol. But alcohol in general: yuck. I don't understand how anyone could drink the stuff. 3.gif

You never said anything about beer 3.gif.  I gotta agree with you that wine isn't very good (at least to me) and mixed drinks/cocktails can taste like fruit juice sometimes (some are made that way!).  Most of the booze I drink comes in the form of beer, but I also like to enjoy a bloody Ceaser sometimes, as well as some wisky and amaretto.

    Anyways,

I'm Jelious of your beer prices!  In Ontario, you can only get beer from one place:  (legally, that is)

    http://www.thesharkguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/beer-store-monopoly-7280381.jpg

Its government controlled, and they essentially create a monopoly over beer sales.

Beer is expensive here!  The crappiest, cheapest beer you can buy is $25.50 (CAD) for a 24 pack, that's over a buck a beer!

If you want some of the permium stuff expect to pay about $40 for a "2-4" and the really nice stuff can cost over $50, that's over two bucks a beer!

That's government regulation for ya.  They also do the same for all other liquor sales.

I wish I could buy beer at the grocery store or the local mini mart, but sadly, you cannot in Ontario.  45.gif

Agreed, wine is horrible. I haven't had much other alchol since I am still a minor and the only stuff I've had is what my parents give me and what I've had on vacation in Malta, but so far I can stand beer, but harder liquior is not my thing...yet. I still have 6 years of college to go through so we'll see how that changes. 3.gif

Not accusing anyone of this, but that reminds me of a friend who subscribes to the unfortunate misperception beer is for manly dudes like himself and wine is for chicks.

He has a bottle of "menage a trois" he got for his 21st birthday from a girl and proudly stated he had not opened it yet...My hypothesis is of course that if I scraped off the label and replaced it with an NFL logo that bottle would be empty by the next day 3.gif

Probably! Wine is not girly in any way and if I liked it I would drink it, in two years of course 2.gif. He probably doesn't like it and doesn't want to appear as a whimp since wine is percieved as a weaker alcholic beverage even though wine can have a higher alcholo content than beer.

I'm not a big fan of the common brands, especially American ones. Bud almost makes me sick. I do however love Québec's absolute best brewer: Unibroue.

    unibroue.jpg

They make different beers, four of them are above. My favourite was an apple flavoured beer, I don't remember its name though.

Oh, and also worthy of mention, the alcohol level is usually stronger than regular watered down beer. 2.gif Usually 7% to over 10%.

If you guys ever get the chance, TRY IT! It's delicious! 19.gif

On the subject of wine, I've never really given it a chance. I drank some once at a, um, "get together" at my mate's house. I don't remember if I like it or not though.

In america a Unibroue is the single eyebrow that  goes all the way across.

I think the marketing teams would probabaly not be able to market that.

Sometime those translations realy screw up the marketing. Like the Chevy Nova in mexico.

Wine is disgusting, but then again, so is grape juice. So that's not surprising.

With alcohol itself..I once dowsed a cocktail, but it was so watered down with fruit that I never tasted the alcohol. But alcohol in general: yuck. I don't understand how anyone could drink the stuff.quote>

Beer is only 4-6% alcohol. Doesn't actually taste like alcohol, it's hard liquor that does. There's good beer and and beer, but then again, one you've had a few, the taste stops mattering. The first time I tried Blue Moon I was already wasted and I loved it. Then I tried it when I was still mostly sober and thought it was disgusting.

See, this is why the more you drink, the easier it is to keep drinking.

Anyways, as for my personal preference... I like Bud Light more than any beer I've tried yet. Though I only turned 21 less than five months ago so there are still plenty I haven't tried yet.

Grape juice is by far the best juice (except for maybe OJ). But really, grape juice > any non-alcoholic beverage.

I found the beer I liked when I was in Malta. It's called Farson Shandy.

    farsonsshandy.png

Sure it has a low alcohol content, but I didn't drink to get drunk, I drank it because it was good. I never understood the reasoning behind hammered by taking a few a shots. Where's the enjoyment? I'll drink a lot over a few hours and enjoy the buzz.

Speak for yourself, OJ's the only juice that's even halfway decent (and even then, only with no pulp). Though, I despise fruity things in general, so my tolerance of OJ is a personal anomaly.

It seems everyone at some point in time owned one. It's ridiculous. I've had about 4 teachers say they owned one, my step-mom owned one, this guy I listen to on the radio owned one, a few aunts and uncles of mine have owned one. Every time I bring up the fact that I own one to some one they just happened to as well! Weird. But that's cool. I was trying to get one 72' or older but I ended up getting a 73' for only $1200. I couldn't pass it up! And of course right when I got it the first thing my step-dad says, "You know, Nova stands for no-go in Spanish."

Also, I think I can safely say, Jack Daniels is the most disgusting whiskey to ever be put on this Earth. Now, I've only had 4 other kinds, but out of that small amount Jack is by far the nastiest.

    I want it!  31.gif

I wonder how hard that would be to drink?  Also, what kind of beer is in there anyway?  Either way, it looks cool, more of a display item than anything.
