Although I am not a beer lover or beer drinker, I do have some recommendations for those who are/do. If you can find them, they are worth a try.

Henry Weinhard's, a NW regional brand. Good hefeweizen, excellent Private Reserve, and they have a Belgian wheat beer that is really top-notch.

Widmer Bros., another NW brewer with its brewery just north of downtown Portland. The lightest, cleanest tasting hefeweizen anywhere... even if it is a cloudy beer, which is strange to me.

Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois are outstanding import offerings.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

It also takes being able to hold your breath while drinking for more than a few seconds at a time - which is where my problem is. I can't chug anything for too long without stopping to breathe.

The other issue is having to stop to burp. This happens a lot whn I'm drinking. For a bit, I become unable to drink any more. Then I let out a nice belch and I'm good to go again.

Maybe its an acquired taste but I prefer Alexander Keith's Red to Moosehead. I guess I am more of an ale man.

Recently, I was in Halifax and got to taste both of the above, and Keith's is a better brew, hands down. I also like their IPA, but was put off by their White. My brew has to be clear, even when its Porter (Guiness). Guiness is good when you want a lot of food in a single pint.

how could you give PRB an 8?

Blue moon not on that list either.

Guinness is pretty much a meal. I much prefer Killkenny, which is also brewed in the Guinness plant.

how could you give PRB an 8?

Beer tasting is nothing like wine tasting. You actually have to drink the beer, I think its to help measure smoothness. As a result, the more beers you taste, the drunker you get.

PBR was near the end where I was pretty much drunk so that may have something to do with it's odd rating. A conflicted palette in my mouth probably welcomed a watery beer to cleanse it, thus the high rating.

I can't find Blue Moon in the beer store search, so I probably can't get it here. http://www.thebeerstore.ca/beers

Most beers produced for the U.S. market has rice in it. Lack some mouth or chewiness.

The issue is how the beer is consumed. The American market at large likes beers that you can just grab and drink anytime, perhaps even chug. This means that the beers have to be weakened/diluted compared to what much of the rest of the world (or a beer snob) expects, because beer with strong flavor has to be drunk slowly and/or with a meal - it's too much of a punch in the tongue to just grab and chug.

The other advantage that light beers have is that they don't hit you as hard alcohol-wise, either, so you can drink more before you start getting dizzy - a plus if you're partying. Though, the coresponding downside is that they will also make you need to pee more.

Blue Moon is way too sour for my taste. Any beer typically served with a slice of citrus is off my list.

Try an IPA Longhammer sometime. After a single taste you will never criticize another beer again. :P

This is the beer I brewed on the weekend

Took about 3 hours to make, and bottled it 3 weeks later. It's pure yum.

IPAs are really something else. I had my first IPA in a local microbrewery: it was warm but pretty good!

Who's in the U.S.? Both Haljackey and I live in southwestern Ontario.

Taste in beer is a matter of what you grew up on. Some of the brews of my youth are no longer available, for example: Kingsbeer, Old Vienna. When I was much younger, I liked Molson's Export, but now I am a complete convert to Keith's but you don't see it much in Ontario.

As for brewing your own porter, just keep the Barretts of Wimpole Street in mind. Elizabeth found it to be distasteful, silly girl, but understanding Edward Barrett one might wonder what horse p... he was buying.

But you have to understand that beer is a local fashion. What goes well in one market doesn't make it in others. Then there are the imported beers from Europe and the far east. I am rather partial to Heineken over Stella Artois, and I like some Japanese beers, but prefer sake.

Living in the US hasn't stopped me from trying beer only available in Canada. Living in Canada needn't stop you from trying a beer only available in the US. You just need to do it next time you're on the other side of the border.

It is legal to bring some back with you, but you have to declare it to customs and pay duty on it if it's more than a certain amount.

Really I prefer Stella over Heineken. Heineken is bitter to me,Stella is very smooth. And Sapporo is one of my favorites but expensive and have to go someplace like Central Market to find it.

Don't feel like your missing out. IPA Longhammer is absolutely revolting beer. It's so sour that it makes other, almost flavorless, beers taste like honey in comparison.

I think I said above that Alexander Keith's IPA is one of the best I've ever tasted. I seldom drink beer, being an ale man myself. As for dropping over to the U.S. to raise a pint or two, that now means I have to have a passport to get into the U.S. That $85 bucks looks better on my back.

Rolling Rock was my favorite pale ale before it got bought up by Interbrew. I remember Export tasting better before Molson merged with Coors. Keiths stayed good despite getting bought as well.

Moose, the next time you're in the Beer Store I'd recommend trying James Ready Ale. It's a discount brand, but tastes quite good.

Thanks, Hal. I'll remember to give that a try when I get there.

Anyone have a favourite draft beer/ale/stout? I really enjoy Guinness when I am dining. You don't see Keith's much this far west.

Well if you look at that list I posted I predicted Creemore Springs Lager to be my favorite. It's very good but very expensive and I think you can only get it in Southern Ontario (as it's brewed in Creemore, Ontario).

As for ale, gotta go with Keiths but Sleeman Cream Ale is good too. Rolling Rock used to be good before they were bought.

For cream beers, Boddington's and Kilkenny (made in the Guniness plant!) are the ones I like.

Not a huge Guiness/stout fan, but the beer I made is pretty good!
