2016 Olympic Bids

Honestly looking from past Olympics it's easy to see that most likely the cost will be more then what is expected. And from Chicago's government it's even easier to tell that the public is going to be screwed in one way or another. But really, even with all that I do kinda wish the games came to the city, not because of how bad it's bound to be, but because of how good it might be.

There are two things here, the public is obviously against taxation for this, and honestly with Blago, and the possible shake up in Illinois politics if everything starts to fall in place many in Chicago may be trying to watch there backs rather than try another deal. Besides that this does give the city a amazing chance to get money for the funds that it needs to upgrade it's transit system, clean up many areas, and generally improve the stander of living in the city.

The fact is we may get a compromise here if Chicago wins, someone is going to benefit and little more than another person, and some secret deals will be made. The city will most likely use there extra funds, and run into cost issues, but the Olympics could also help expands the cities chances of modernization and such. Then again the CTA may just waste all that money... but one can dream 21.gif

All true, but where would they put the stadium? Not sure how many people would enjoy being uprooted merely for a huge metal mess that will be forgotten after the games are over (i.e. Athens).

TBH, I'd rather see the games in Tokyo. The Japanese are masters at using limited space and are world renowned for their grandiose construction projects (i.e. Pearl Bridge in Kobe). Not to mention they haven't hosted the Summer Olympics since 1964, which was almost half a century ago while the US had them in 1996.

The 1964 Tokyo Olympics did popularize technological wonders.  The groundbreaking shinkansen bullet train and the Tokyo monorail system where timed to open for the olympics, and indeed, the photogenically monstrous engineering of Tokyo's expressways was set up for the games as well.  Not to mention the first color televised games and first live satellite broadcast across the Pacific to the U.S.  Architecture students today should know about heavyweight Kenzo Tange and his sensual stadiums.

That was over 40 years ago...what would they come up with this time?

^ hmmm what could they do? These are the Japanese were talking about, I wouldn't be surprised if they had Robots and flying cars for the games, and the worlds first ever Hd Hd TV, which would have a better than life picture 3.gif Trust me, all those old movies don't lie lol.

Please see the images I posted of proposed Chicago Olympic venues when I started the thread. The Olympic Bid committee insists that no one will be displaced, as the city will be using existing public spaces.

Can anyone from the other candidate cities please post information or images of what your bids look like?

Wait, what? No room in Chicago, as opposed to Tokyo? Yeah, right.

Chicago is only cold in the winter. Like Tokyo. Ugly? You must not have ever been here, or you wouldn't say that.

A few things Chicago has that Tokyo doesn't:

1200 acres (almost 5 km²) of Lincoln Park, plus the free zoo and conservatory.

Garfield Park's Victorian-era conservatory, one of the largest in the country.

33 public beaches stretching 25 miles, 9 world-class museums, 552 parks covering 7300 acres, a world famous skyline, architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Mies Van Der Rohe, among many more, and the world's first skyscraper.

Public sculpture by Picasso, Chagall, Calder, Moore, and more.

The world's first elevated electric train (sorry, Duke, it's still true) is among many, many firsts for Chicago. Like the Ferris Wheel, zippers, and Twinkies.

And don't even get me started on the food and music. Our local culture is world-renowned, with or without wasabi.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

Huh? I totally agree with manticorefan.

I'm from the NYC area originally, lived in CA four years (didn't like it), and I'm loving Chicago. And I moved here in the middle of winter.

Sure, it has its issues, but generally, this city is great. All the open spaces in the images I posted at the beginning of this thread are existing. This is a city of parks. "Urbs in horto" my friend, the "city in a garden."

I never knew how nice Chicago was until I moved here.

everyone is able to decide for themselves which city looks better ( And thats Chicago by the way 2.gif 2.gif but saying there is no room is very very untrue. Now really Chicago has 10 million in it's metro... Tokyo has... 30+ Million if im right? Chicago has a lot of public park space... is more spread out... less dense... and the Olympic stadium is going to be built in a park rather than a city block.... honestly it has more than enough space to pull the games off. Besides that honestly... I would rather live in Chicago than Tokyo... i mean I think both are great cities.. but Chicago is Chicago,  Even if all the politians are corrupt and mayor and his friends have a strangle hold on the city.. but still 3.gif

    Hello everybody,

having lived in Tokyo for 18 years of my life, and having moved to Vancouver quite recently I am both enthusiastic for the Vancouver olympics and a most likely Tokyo olympics, but at the same time I hate them both!

Why the HELL do we have to hold olympics in either city? Why not some under developed town, say in the case of Japan, Sendai or Fukuoka, or maybe even Nagoya or Naha? Why not in Calgary or Edmonton, uuuh Saskatoon... no not Saskatoon, or u know maybe Halifax? The point is Chicago and Tokyo are both relatively well developed in terms of public transportation and infrastructure, lets do it somewhere that needs it, like RIO!

Why should first nations people have to move out of their land, why should we be destroying more natural lands in Vancouver for the olympic village? Why in Tokyo must we pay for a massive stadium in the middle of the bay (of course it will look pretty damn cool), when its just going to sink back into the bay in 20 years? (a stadium sinking will also look cool, but probably at the cost of my taxes). In fact you all may not know, but why should we build the olympic village over what is still a rather toxic artifical island made of waste? I just dont like our mayor in Tokyo, but other than personal issues with the mayor theres so many reasons why we shouldnt have the olympics in Tokyo and probably just as many reasons why not to hold the olympics in Chicago, and probably so much more reasons to hold the Olympics in RIO!

    GO RIO!

uuuh right there was Madrid... Madrid's ok... ur cool Madrid.

But I noticed no one has posted pics for the Tokyo bid so here I am...

    dream_island_cluster.jpg

    Dream Island Cluster

In reality you will not be able to see Mount Fuji from Tokyo during the summer, this is an accurate picture during a clear day during the winter. During the olympics Tokyo will be covered in a fine haze and dust. Also the water is not too clean, would require major clean up of the canals.

    musubi_cluster.jpg

    Musubi Cluster

The Tokyo Bay area is not this green, in fact the roofs of the buildings you see towards the bottom of the pic, those are just green roofed buildings... Also the artificial islands on which the stadium is located and the island to the right of that; the stadium island will probably displace some people, and the island to its right, the island which will hold the olympic village is still seeping toxic water...

    olympic_stadium_e.jpg

    Olympic Stadium

Now thats a pretty cool lookin' stadium, is that roof floating? damn that would be cool. Unfortunately this area is not what you would call "easy-access."

    ov_garden.jpg

    Olympic Village Garden

Its built on top of a former toxic waste dump, you wont believe your eyes! Until you jump into the water... aaaaaaagh it burns!

    ov_room.jpg

    Olympic Village Room

Nice view, unfortunately skies are almost never that clear in Tokyo during the summer... aaah Winter Olympics?

This is probably just going to be another failed realestate thats going to have to be sold for almost a third of the original construction price just like all the other apartment buildings around Tokyo now...

    palace_cluster.jpg

    Palace Cluster

You know if we could just kill the imperial family and then abolish the imperial household then we would have a perfectly good olympic park right smack in the middle of the city with wonderful transportation access, aaand, it will probably result in a new subway line under the palace so I can get to Akihabara a lot faster. But ya there gonna do things like Judo and etc in that green roofed building to the bottom right. And thats where they did it back in 64.

    sea_forest_cluster.jpg

    Sea Forest Cluster

Another former waste dump turned green, I have no idea where their gonna use this for, its just barren land right now, seeping toxic stuff and really muddy. Oh and I dont know why the water is that color, chemicals perhaps?

    seaside_park.jpg

    Seaside Park

This is uuuhh... damn they should really center on the thing thats going to be used, I think its the stuff to the right, oh right and the horse thingy ya so thats probably gonna be held at the horse tracks bottom left ya? By the way, the canal here stinks like fish real bad...oh but I did track and field at the arena here once, ya it smelled like fish, but really lovely Sakura trees, reminds me of my youth... i hated it.

    yoyogi_cluster.jpg

    Yoyogi Cluster

I dont understand whats going on with this picture, and I'm pretty good with maps... oooooh I get it now... haha they did nothing, lol.

Well I hoped you like the pictures. Hope it never comes to this, but it probably will. Hope it goes to Rio, who knows, why even hold the olympics at all?

Tepodon, thank you for sharing those images. I hope we can get someone from Madrid and Rio de Janeiro to share their cities' Olympic Bid images as well.

From your comments on each photo, it sounds to me that the Olympics are also a controversial topic in Tokyo. I find it interesting that you believe that some of the proposed Olympic construction will be in unhealthy areas, and may displace some people.

Wow tepodon, you should do the advertising for Tokyo. You turned the tropical city pictures into a toxic, nuclear wasteland. Which sadly enough is probably true. 8.gif

How about we take the Olympics to an actually (sort of) tropical place like Rio?

...and cut down a few trees in the process? 3.gif

I got the pics for RIO! the pics for Madrid sucked, they were too small, not much of a presentation, there was one picture worth showing though.

    Madrid

    Villaolmpica_rectangular_reducida.jpg

by the way... a picture of Tokyo's skies during the winter:

    327198538_9e314aabc0.jpg

nice... but not like the computer rendered image. I bet if we did hold the olympics in Tokyo they'd render the images of the sky to make it look cleaerer, just like they did in Beijing with the fireworks. They'll probably make it into an absurdly blue color.

But ya the ICO can just shove their "olympics" right up their arse. Give it to Lagos or Jakarta!

    Jakarta 2020

By the way, I think the theme of buliding all the olympic venues on what was formerly toxic waste dumps is like "yay we turned a toxic pile of shi+ and turned it into a green overpriced wonderland!" So the point would be to remove the toxic chemicals from the ground, which they are currently working on, I'm not sure whether their still working on that or not, maybe they decided to just cover it up with really thick layers of cement like Tokyo Disney Land.

I take back what I said before. Rio has a beautiful olympic village planned. In my opinion, it looks as good as Chicago's. I don't care who wins between the two at this point, they'll both be fantastic canidate cities. Especially because they both have great waterfronts. Tokyo will always have the chance to do what I saw a few posts up in years to come.

Also that reminds me, does anyone know if there is a certain amount of times a city can bid for the games or a certain amount of time frame where they can bid again if they don't get it?

I think a city can just keep bidding as many times as they want even after they hold one if they want to.

Personally, just screw the whole thing and put that money into actual things people need instead of stadiums ppl r just gonna forget about at the end of the games.

Seriously the olympics can either cripple or make cities, and in most cases it cripples because a lot of cities are destroyed financially in the bidding process cause those IOC folk keep wanting more and more gifts (bribes). Take Osaka for example, that city is in financial ruins now cause of the IOC.

    NO MORE OLYMPICS

I hope my hometown of Rio gets the Olympics. I saw how much the 2008 Olympics made a difference to China & Beijijng, and to other host cities, so I can imagine that the ability to host the Olympics would really help Rio grow, prosper and gain the positive recognition it deserves. I was in the city for the Pan American games 2 summers ago, and I saw how they really stepped up security to ensure everyone's safety (Rio doesn't have a very good safety record as most of you know already). I'm sure the government will put in a tremendous effort to make the city safer if the bid is awarded to them. There are already many stadiums that can be used in various districts of the city, and many spots to host marathons & running competitions. It would also be a win for South America as the continent has never hosted the Olympics; it would be a cool event if it happens.

Tepodon, thanks for posting the Rio pictures. It looks very impressive.

I have been to Madrid, and while I really liked the city, I just don't see it as an Olympic host. Where would all the aquatic events be held?

Geez, Tokyo looks overwhelming. I'm kinda concerned about the pollution that you mention.

ilikehotdogsalot, do you know how much of the proposed venues in Rio are existing and how many will be built expressly for the games? How much will remain after the games?

Also, from the renderings, it looks like the majority of the venues will be on the ocean side of Rio and not the bay. What is there now on the site of the proposed venues? Can you share some of that info? What are the controversies? Will there be people displaced because of the proposed sites?
