There is gun control. I'm pretty sure he obtained that AK-47 illegally so he bi-passed the control part. Also, gun control would not stop something like this. This man was going to get those weapons no matter what.

Not good enough obviously. You can't get AK-47's in Britain.

And you're not supposed to be able to get them here, but when people want something they get it. What can we do? Do you want us to have police search everyone's house for these weapons? I think we have done all we can. Plus, we have Mexico right next to us and a lot of coast line to cover. As much as we try, we can't track every single item that comes near our soil. And I'm sure if you knew who to ask, you could get an AK in Britain.

Never herd a case of an AK used in a crime. Illegal pistols yes, oozi's (Isreali Machine pistols) yes, but not AK's.

No system of gun control is perfect, but some system is surely better than none. Just giving up and saying we can't do it doesn't help.

I'm not saying we chould give up, I'm saying that we are doing as best as we can with out infringing upon the 2nd ammendment. Some poeple say we already have by making AKs illegal and other automatic weapons, which I can not see why you would need one unless you were going to attacck people. I agree with gun control, just not gun banning. But either way, this man would have gotten that gun.

Two men were jailed for life three weeks ago for using an AK-47 to kill David King, a drug dealer from Hoddesdon, Herfordshire, in 2003 - the first time that an automatic weapon had been used during a crime in the UK.- here is one case in the UK, so very, very rare but it does happen. Would be nice in the US if they 1) enforced the gun control laws 2) standardized them across the States. Also I read in the paper that 80% of the guns seized in Mexico come from.... the US, surprising eh? Although if they were banned, that probably would change to them bringing them in here, but you cant say for sure. And really, who needs fully auto or even semi auto weapons outside of the police and military?

I'd rather live here in America with a higher chance of getting gunned down than live in a society that snoops the way the UK does. No offense to the UK in any way though. Tis a great Kingdom... but you must remember... 'to each his own.'

Also, many people in the US have a legal right to purchase semi-automatic weapons. Others have the right to keep their machine guns. For some reason my dad has a liscense entitling him to buy S/A's. I don't know why he is entitled, but he is... likely from the time he spent working for Uncle Sam (non- military).

This is a gun control issue though. The guy discovered his mother had called the police and he was afraid they would take his guns. (a likely reaction since he may have ended up getting 302ed in which case he would have to surrender all weapons.) Well, he would at least have to surrender his hand guns, probably the rest too, and most certainly the AK.

This could have been worse. At least the guy kept his weapons at home (a lot of people around here carry "belly goats" (small pistols they can keep hidden on their waste), especially in the bars. Kinda like a Derringer. Actually that is more common the further out of they city you go... but if you are out of the house and your guns are at home, you can't shoot anyone. This is a really unfortunate event but the blame belongs in a number of places.

The dispatcher who responded to the first 2 casualties sent the third officer to the home with no idea the suspect was armed. That is just inexcusable.

This type of thing is bound to happen though, especially if you do not want to live in a police state.

As was said earlier, the US has gun control laws on the books.  The problem is successfully enforcing those laws.

Sure agreed, but doing nothing does nothing. The longest journey starts with the first step.

Incidently just for the record an ARMED police officer was injured in a confrontation with criminals in London yesterday (Saturday)

Which proves carrying guns is more likely to get you injured.

Australia has twice the coastline, no friendly canadians for a quater of the border and a 10th of the population. And mexico? last i heard guns are going in, not coming out. You've got nothing to ***** about.

Of course, i think its the culture that you have over there that really messus you up with respect to firearms. There's AK's in australia, they've been used occasionally (mostly in gangland stuff), they've been siezed occasionally. However, Legal ownership of them is almost nil.

Of course, that doesn't matter. No need to bring weapons across the border anyway, our army 'lost' 7 anti tank rockets from its armory a few years back. Word has it that a gang has them for 'insurance' purposes.

I don't thinkyou understand what we are saying. We have the laws and we are trying to enforce them. But it is very hard to make sure no one out of 300 million has an illegal weapon.

I love how you said 'lost'.  That sucks. Those things can cause a lot of trouble.

Heh, didn't realise that was filtered.

Nothing to compain about. I think that the US probably has an easier job of guarding its coastlines. Although getting stuff into it might be more popular.

I understand what you say, like many people I think you're wrong. This is the other side of the coin.

The 2nd amendment is obsolete. It was written when America was a new country without Military forces to protect it. It now has very large military forces. Guns are dangerous, the more guns the more chance of getting shot and killed. No system of Gun Control is perfect, you will never stop all guns. But that's not a valid reason not to reduce the number of guns for reasons of public safety. Criminals are forced to carry guns, because the general public have them, therefore the criminals are more likely to use them. They will attempt to burgle a building ready to fire.

Oh I see. I get what you're saying, we do not have as much coast line, but it is still a daunghting task.

The 2nd Amendment has two purposes, not just the one. It's other role is to allow people the means to rise up against the government if it steps out of line. I agree that there isn't a perfect system(except for no system at all!). I know I'm not ready to hand over my guns and leave myself defenseless. I don't have that kind of trust in my government because stupid people are allowed to vote. Example, my senior class. Half could not even name the 50 states. That's who voted.

You can get AK's here (UK). If they're being imported its almost certain some are going 'missing'.

Its probably just not as easy as in the US.

Anyway, criminals here in the UK dont need to bother with guns, they just knife everyone instead. Same result, not quite as easy, but at the end of the day if they want someone dead its going to happen with or without guns.

I find it hard to believe anyone in the US gets a gun to protect themselves vs. the goverment... I think it is right that people have a right to defend themselves/homes/families however I don't think the legalisation of guns is the right way to do it.

Nobody here in the UK (that I know of) feels they need a gun to protect themselves vs. either criminals or the government, thus no criminals need to carry them to 'balance out the power'.

At the end of the day do you want someone in your house stealing your TV with a baseball bat to intimidate you who is unlikely to kill you or someone with a gun who will shoot you out of self preservation because he expects you to have your own gun in your home?

As soon as you give anyone a right to carry firearms there is just going to end up being an escalation of force between opposing parties (Cold War anyone?).

Knife crime isn't that prevalent in the UK, unless you're a young black Londoner. Then it's mainly between their own kind.
