Halifax Update

The metro area continues to expand along the various shorelines, mainly to the South, but Halifax proper is also adding new developments.

The downtown area is moving to more high-rise buildings as space becomes an issue. The city is reticent to demolish existing residential areas and so every unused space is a hot item to potential developers. Good roads and mass transit are crucial in moving people in and out of the downtown districts.

This view shows the financial district, row house neighborhoods and the docks. The ferry commission is studying plans to expand the terminal to handle the increased traffic.

Northwest of downtown a new Wal-Mart and Tasco shopping center has been opened to serve the growing neighborhoods in the area. There was quite a bit of discussion about the new center's impact on small businesses but in the long run it was felt that the consumer was best equipped to make their own buying decisions.

One segment that is taking off is warehousing as this commercial park illustrates. With port activity on the rise and a new container terminal ramping up, trucking and distribution companies are flocking into the area.

Jamestown Update

I promised a few update photos from the community of Jamestown which is located South of Halifax Island. It's location on several transportation routes has made it a prime location for business and commuters. Because of the area's hilly terrain, construction has required extensive modification and the use of retaining walls to create flat building sites.

Southbay Hospital is a full service facility and can take care of most ailments area residents might suffer from.

Across the avenue Ames Department Store is the city's only large discount store. A new development is planned though it is thought to contain more upscale stores.

Most residents live in highrise buildings like these because of almost no flat land.

Pembrook Update

Pembrook occupies the other half of the peninsula where the airport is located and is primarily an industrial area housing distribution companies and various manufacturers. It's close proximity to the air terminal and ports have made it a prime location for industry.

The area is a gently sloping terrain which is being terraced to house all types of businesses like these in the Pembrook Business Park.

The ports authority has built a small terminal to handle the container traffic from the park speeding up the delivery process.

The Back Bay Bridge is part of the central connector system, joining Halifax Island and East Bay communities. It's signature tripple arch is lighted at night and is unique in it's design.

Essex

Essex is located just down the peninsula from the Pembrook industrial area and has grown by providing housing for the many workers who fill the jobs in the park. The city is working with developers on a large marina/condo/commercial development that will contain several thousand apartments, shops and a large marina.

You made some really great terraces. Those japanese walls look good but for bigger diagonal sections I prefer Jeroni's as I have the same prblems with their diagonal textures!

Essex

The city's population has reached the 90,000 mark, making it the second largest municipality in the region. This view shows the whole city, facing north, with the metro airport off screen to the upper left.

Marina Cove has trippled the city's poplulation but has also built schools, roads and a police and fire station.

One element of the development is the casino which is operated by a local indian tribe who's ancestral lands include the peninsula the city is located on. The casino, tennis center and condo's have provided the tribe with much needed funds to help lift it's members out of dependence on the central government.

Airport Update

The county continues to upgrade the airport approaches and terminal. The new approach is much more open and able to handle high traffic volumns. Settlement ponds have been used to control run-off.

Excellent work on this CJ I see! That square with the statue is amazing! Nice work with the placement of all those lots, it really spices up your city! Its all the little things you included that make this CJ so great. Keep up the work, I hope to see more soon.

Reminds me of the local Ames that closed a few years ago in my home town when the company died.

Seabrook      

Seabrook is located on the western coast of Halifax Island. It has traditionally been a resort community for Halifax apartment dwellers to get away during summer months. The hills and ocean provide a cool climate and offer hiking and biking trails with great views of the sea.

Downtown features some offices, and numerous hotels and bread and breakfasts. It is connected with Halifax by a modern four lane highway and mass transit.

Smaller boarding houses and private homes are beginning to go up on the highlands surrounding the town.

Residents value education and have built a first class grade school for their children. High schoolers go to a nearby Halifax campus.
