I have a peculiar situation in Sim city 4. My eleveated rails and monorails pollute. Are they supposed to pollute when overused? I am confused.

@Matkingos -- pollution on el-rail and monorail is the result of settings used in the NAM traffic simulators intended to make use of the game's ability to calculate commute times and pathfinding with an accounting for a given network's level of congestion.  The problem is that when the simulator is set up to generate congestion, it also generates pollution.  The fact that monorail and el-rail are electric and therefore cannot, in reality, generate pollution was a mistake made by Maxis and cannot be avoided when using the "Travel type generates traffic" property in a traffic simulator.  Some details are available here.

What to do about it?

To reduce this pollution, use any version of simulator z and enable the Clean Air Act in the city ordinances section of your budget.  Z has adjusted the Clean Air Act to dramatically reduce traffic pollution while still remaining realistic.

To completely eliminate all traffic pollution (but not industrial pollution), use this mod.

Not all mass transit is pollution-free... even electic rail. I don't know all the details, but cleaner does not equate emissions-free. That's part of the differences between EL and Monorail.

Also, SC4 migth be looking at an older time when all train were downrigth dirty. Some old photos on New York and Chigaco can point that out but I don't have time to fish for that now.

I'm sorry, I can't answer that question. I haven't successfully established a monorail/el rail system before and I didn't know that these system pollute. Thank you for telling me.
