Invalid CD Key In Legally Purchased Copy?

I purchased a copy of Simcity 4 Deluxe at Target yesterday, and when the installation process began, I entered the CD key that's printed on the back of the manual, and I got a message about an "invalid CD key." I retyped the key, got the same message, tried again, and again, I got this message. I've tried about ten times now, and I can't even get past the first step of the installation! I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium - is there a compatiability issue I'm not aware of? I've searched for a solution to this issue, but it seems like no one else has had it. I'm kind of ticked off, because I've been wanting to play SC4 for years, but now that I have a computer capable of running it, I end up with two new coasters!

The game runs fine on Vista. Was the CD case sealed? If it wasn't it is possible that the disc where swapped.

Make sure you are not substituting a "O" for a zero, or vis-versa.

I recently lost my manual for SC4 (the color one with the CD key...) and with some internet browsing I found out that you can use other people's CD keys lol.

Now I can only ensure that you use this key on your LEGALLY PURCHASED copy of SC4...

Thanks for the advice. I just noticed that my Target receipt has a "same item only if opened" disclaimer on it, and they had about a dozen copies, so I'm going to try a swap some time this week.
