City Size Limit

I've tried going through the forums to find anything about the type of problem I have, yet I have found nothing.  Perhaps someone can help me?

I have region of 5 cities connected to each other of the following sizes: 150,000 ; 150,000 ; 30,000 ; 20,000 ; 2,000

I have been unable to get the two cities in my region past 150,000 in population.  The cities just seem to go through the same cycle over and over again where the population cycles between 130,000 and 170,000.  Health and education are good in both cities (though I'm probably spending too much on them anyway).  I don't have any mass transit in the city, but traffic isn't a horrible problem (60+ minute commute time).  The city has roughly 60,000 commercial jobs and 15,000 industrial jobs, highway connections equalling 2 to each other city and a number of road connections.  Also has a large municipal airport.

The other city of 150,000 has absolutely no health or education and again, no mass transit.  Commute time is 40+ minutes for this city.  This city has a small landing strip but it shows it as being totally unused.  0 used capacity vs. 10,000 capacity.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what I may try would be helpful.  If you need any more info please just ask.  Thanks in advance.

Search the forums for cap relief.

Build a mass transit. 60+ it's a LONG trip.

Yes, as the others said, demand caps and commute times would be the most likely causes of most of your problems.

The most likely causes of the landing strip problems are:

1) You have no commerce in that city
2) The airport is not connected (via a road, avenue, or one way road) to the rest of the city.

Yeah that airport isn't working because I think commercial has well passed its demand cap (highway connections, TV studio, radio station, etc...)  There is little demand for commercial in that city for the obvious reason that it is my slums city.  The airport does have a road running in front of it, which is connected to the highway and the rest of the city.  I have to think that the problem is the commute time.  I was really trying to avoid instituting any sort of mass transit system but I suppose I could always try to experiment with subways and bus stops.

I still don't think it's a residential demand cap issue though.  I have a major league and a minor league stadium in my city.  That means I should be clear for at least 500,000 low wealth sims.  Maybe I just need more industry with better ways of getting from res to the industry zones?

I think that adding a good mass transit system as well as a few parks in good areas will help. Another way is by adding 4x4 Res and Com zones in the city, this will allow bigger buildings with more population to be built.

    Bus, subway, rail, etc.

I've found that almost immediately after building a bus system my zones start building more, so lack of mass transit is likely your problem.

If you are like me and math is fun to you; try my concept at this thread: SC4 forum/City Building Concepts/Mathmatical Concept V1 It isn't completed, but it does show you a visual idea, I think. Yeah, buses are my favorite and least expensive mass transit. Actually, I always turn a profit with buses. Make sure to put bus stations in neighboring cities also. Your citizens will be, more apt to pay a fare, for traveling to  more polluted, less important, neighboring cities.(hint)
