Hang-ups (i.e. crashes) and settings

Bit of background first:

I've just ordered SC4Deluxe and up to now have only played normal SC4 without Rush Hour.  I know that SC4 is notorious for hanging up randomly and I experienced this myself.  My pc is running XP with a AMDAthlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800, 2gb RAM and Nvidea GForce 6600 (128mb I think).

Does the Rush Hour expansion help with stability?  What are the recommended graphics settings?  Are there any patches I need?  Would I get any real benefits from upgrading my graphics card?

Sorry for the *****ishness but I'd appreciate some advice from real players rather than the EA site!  I've also already downloaded the April 08 NAM, as judging by what people say here it's pretty much essential.

First, welcome the ST forums.

You will still have "hanging up randomly" if you don't save often.  You still might get CTD's if you are not selective about the custom content you install.

If the AMD processor doesn't include the AMD Dual Core Optimizer [link], you might want to install it to help stabilize the game play.

You will need the game update patch, and if you want nightlights on the custom content then you will need the SC4update4BAT.exe installed.

I dont think your computer specs are a problem, you have more than the recommended specs for SimCity 4, which will run on integrated graphics. Your hangups and CTD's (crash to desktop) could be something else like a mod or addon.
