Not a bad start. You have some good detail in the windows (I'm guessing its a texture on a square?). On a building that high though some variety to the window glass would do wonders. Jasoncw has a good tutorial (linked in his signature) that would be a good place to get started on customizing things. Are those meant to be windows on the base and top? They almost look like window openings that were filled in with concrete. The glass there definitely needs some work to give it some life, especially when you have such a nice little door on the place. The texture tiling on the side will need some attention (I know it's big pain in the but on those kinds of surfaces). One other thought, this may just be the style and if so ignore this comment, but your columns on both buildings feel rather big and blocky. This is a really good start. It looks like you've got some of the basics down, so if you have some patience and a willingness to learn I think you'll improve quickly.

*Update* here is a new picture of the building I am currently working on...Incase you are following my progress 9.gifhahha. I added some window textures to the windows as you can see, to see what they would look like. I dont think I like them though.....

I dont know how to create light shine through a texture for night lights.  I put a texture on the UMV map for my window.. Is that what I am suppose to do???

    Well here it is..newglassbuildingjx8.jpgthglassbuildingdc0.jpg

If you're not using night textures in gmax (and I wouldn't recommend them, as they should be seen on the Maxis buildings), then make sure the texture for your windows is set to a lower opacity - I think in the phillipbo tutorial, he recommended 40% opacity with certain specular levels and glossiness. Then it's a matter of setting up some lights inside the building, and subdividing the interior depending on how you want it lit and what windows you want to show light and what windows you want dark.

Another technique for nightlighting is projector mapping.. There should be a tutorial coming out soon but I will explain the process simply:

    1. Download some TruNight Windows

    2. Create a spot light, name it nitelite_window1

    3. Change the aspect ratio fit your window, make sure the light is perfectly aligned with your window.

    4. Open up the projector map selector and choose one of the night windows downloaded.

    5. Set the intensity to 2.5 - 3.5 (or less or more)

    6. Render it. Make adjustments as needed.

Brief, I know, but that is the process. If you need more detailed information just ask!

Is this a 3dMax solution, or can this be applied in gmax too?  I've been wondering about this and self-illumination, but speaking for myself, I'm working in gmax, so I can only answer things on that end to a limited degree...

I started a new building to practice getting the fundamentals down instead of trying to create the ultimate right away. I am creating a simple building and going to finish it all the way.

I want to learn how to do nightlighting so that's what I am practicing on this building.thkutzbuildingdaysa2.jpgthkutzbuilldingnightlg2.jpgThe problem is I don't know how to do nightlighting and/or how to get light to shine through a window texture. If that is possible. Also sometimes I put the word night in front of the UMV map on the window and there is no night light.

As you can see I have put up interior walls, I heard this helps for night lighting windows.
Can anyone help me with this???? 9.gif Thanks.

If we're talkin' gmax and night textures, make sure the word is "nite" and not "night." Yeah it's stupid, but it's how they set it up.

For nightlights such as omnis and target spots and the like, make sure the word is "nitelite" ...

I looked at your model above - it doesn't look like you have any window glass - it just looks like open spaces in the splines where the windows are outlined. If you're using night textures, it's the glass that needs to be textured at a lower opacity, and then the prefix "nite" added to it. If you're working from phillipbo's tutorial, it's explained in depth there...
