Iraqi journalist throws shoe at Bush

It does illustrate how Iraq has changed. If he had attempted to do this to Hussein(Saddam, not Barack), he would have been tortured to death along with his wife and children. Now he can likely just bribe his way out of jail.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

manticorefan: Wow. I was just about to say the samething. No matter how many harsh words I have for Bush, I have to admit that it's remarkable to see the change in Iraq.

Seems to me that, if you are going to insult someone, do in terms he understands.   To most Americans, throwing a shoe is just bizarre.

But, as Jay Leno says, it's not like anyone can interpret it as a friendly act.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I dunno. If my friends attacked me with my birthday cake, I'd be somewhat upset. A few months ago, I found out that there are some cultures where if your friends don't bake you a cake on your birthday and then ruin your clothes with it, it's considered an extreme insult.

But I digress....

I would counter that and say:  If you are going to be the President of the United States, you had best understand the culture of the country you are dealing with, and/or decide to invade.  This is something sorely lacking in Bush.  His father made the same mistake, so it must run in the family. quote>

Good point.

For those who pay attention, it is a well-known fact that the feet, being the lowest part of the body, are one of the primary demeaning insults one can hurl (no pun intended) at another.  I wonder how many people are aware it is extremely insulting to show the sole of your shoe to a Muslim?  If you happen to eat at a Muslim restaurant, be sure not to sit with your foot on your knee... you just might find an unwelcome surprise in your food. quote>

This came up during one of the cultural sensitivity classes at work.   The instructor pointed out one guy who was sitting with one foot on the other knee and asked how many of us had noticed or cared.    No one had.   It's something that Americans do without thinking and don't care about when it happens.   But not everyone sees it that way.

I've been trying to come up with an equivalent insult in American culture.    The closest I have come up with is the one finger salute.  but even that gets laughed off much of the time.

You do have a point.  Cultural differences can be quite varied.   One of my friends claims it's part of wedding tradition for the groom to push the bride down the street in a wheelbarrow while people throw raw eggs at them.

And there are, of course, flash games being made of this, too.
