No matter what i do my ports wont connect and sometimes they stay dead shells.
Its weird theyll work for like a month on fastforward and then itll shut down, i have a whole string of seafront towns each with atleast one passenger ferry and one car and passenger ferry. sumtimes ill have 2 of each and they may go back and forth amoung themselves and to the coastal city to the right but the left and the one in the far left wont go to the right at all.

i know in the middle i have a peopleless idust town is this the problem?

i think you are talking about ferry terminals right? if not then explain more. But at the moment it looks like either the water is to shallow for the ferries to go to, or sims don't want to travel to the right. Also the ferry terminals may be to far apart-if it is in a different city tile or something. Bridges also prevent ferries from passing underneath. Check to make sure you have good enough depth for the ferries, and then check the transportation graph/view in the region (if you are using more than 1 city tile. I think the ferry color is dotted purple lines in the water)

Exactly......if there's enough jobs on the side where the sims live, then they won't take the ferry to the other side. To make them take the ferry, continue to grow many Res on the sims side without zoning any jobs (no C's nor I's)  and then create jobs on the other side and you will have your sims getting over their seasickness and take the ferry.

Just in case though, do also what JJC12321 mentioned above, check the bridge height and the transportation map in the regionview if the two terminals are not on the same tile .

Here is a question.  Will a ferry terminal work in a city with no residential?  I put one in my industrial city thats connected by water to my residential city.  The one in the Industrial city had 0 passengers.  Does the city need residents in order for the ferry to be used?

It will work, but make sure that if you are using the passenger only ferries that you have adequate busing so that they can get to/from the ferry terminal and work.

The industrial city is in another tile, and the the two tiles are connected by water.  All the Sims from the residential tile will be able to use the ferry to get to work in the industrial tile?  I hope so because the two cities are prospering well and this will help a lot!

Yes, if you have a ferryport in each tile and both city tiles are connected with water. To see if it works, create a sim and let him find a job on the other tile or go to regionview and look at the transportation map, you will see dotted lines in the water, or query both ferries in both cities to see how many travel with it.
