This has been said before, depends where you include, London's residential population is approx 8,000000 and Tokyo's is 11,600000, Mexico City's is 20,000000

There are a few measurements used for city population: metro, and city proper. City proper is what is under control of the city gov't, metro is the area economically dependant on the urban core, including other smaller cities neaby.

London's city proper = 8,000,000, metro= 12,000,000

Mexico City city proper = almost 9,000,000, metro = 28,000,000

New york city proper=8,000,000, metro =24,000,000

Tokyo's a little more complicated. The prefecture of Tokyo has almost 12 million people, but the part that is the city itself is 8 and a half million people. As for the metro, estimates are in the 35 million area.

The largest city by city proper is Mumbai, with 12 million in the city, the largest by metro is easily Tokyo, followed by Seoul, then Mexico City, then NYC.

Moving on to the topic.........

I think a city is a location that is the main economic, population, or gov't capitol of a region.

I also think that popultion itself isn't a great measurement. Any city can annex a heck of a lot of suburbs (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/Ottawaexpands.png)

and increase its population, whereas important cities like Boston are underestimated because of small population when they are just really small in area.

Even if wikipedia was a fully correct source, these statistics depend on how it's measured in these countries. For example, in some languages "conurbation" or `urban area` is the same as `metro area`.quote>

Two things:-

Firstly wikipedia is noted for not being accurate. Regard everything on Wikipedia with suspicion.

Secondly I agree with you, it depends what you include.

Maybe a better question would be in SC4 at what point to you define your 'city' a city? is it when u get offered a city hall, when it has public transport, when it has a dense commerical area or simply by population?1.gif
