Strange Error; Perhaps Graphics-Rules Related?

Hello everyone. I recently bought a new Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCI-E x16 card on a dual-core machine running on Windows XP Media Center Edition. When I first started up SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition I found the controls set very low. I tried to set them up further and restart and they just return to the defualt. Also, On the closest zoom the game crashes. I think this might be caused by the old Graphics Rules File, but I don't know how to change it.

Here are the settings I can't change:

graphics settings

 Please Help!

I can't see the picture... is the picture a .JPG?

By the way in order to reset the graphics on SimCity you have to restart Sim City afterwards. Do you think that is the cause of the problem?

Its probably because the graphics card is too new and not registered in the videocards.sgr file (located in the INSTALL (ie Program files) not the mydocs directory).. I had to add my x1900xt.. you might try entering the code (from your computer properties file for the card)

Ex. from my XP properties info: (My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device mngr->Display adapter->YOUR CARD->Properties)

    XP Properties

and see if that works.. change it from whatever it defaulted to to your card.. under "ATI" section in my pc I added the line  (note that the ID # came from the properties above.. you should put the number and name from YOUR CARD's properties.. you have to put the 0x in front of it to indicate a HEX number)

    card 0x7249 "Radeon X1900 Series"

to the end of the list (using your notepad or other text editor).. that was adequate.. if you have problems post again

PS: you should post a .jpg pic intead of the .png  (as per ST forum posting rules)

I tried that, but I am still having the same problem. Is there a step I missed?

hmm.. well it seems i edited a file (not sure what it was originally called.. it is in the "apps" folder of the install directory.. I don't know what it was originally called but probably something like "config-log.txt".. I have renamed it and it looks something like this:

    videopropertiestxtnf3.jpg

You can read what the various entries mean if you stumble around in the install folder doc's (for those things that aren't pretty obvious)

Hmm.. I am  not sure if this is created each startup (based on the date it may be) or not. If it is generated at EACH Startup, you may actually have to read some of the doc's to see if you can figure out what config file to mod.. Now I think on it I think this may be done at startup and named based on what you have named your PC.. mine is called CROSSFIRE.  I got this done by reading the CD and install docs that came with SC4 so I expect it isn't magic. It has been about 2 yrs since I did it though, so sorry my memory isn't better. You'll note though that the video card entries above carry over from my computer driver files, so it shows that the info is being identified properly and carried over.. Is yours carrying over?

Added note: Hmm.. I may have edited the Graphic Rules.xgr also. You may try that if the above doesn't work out. From the looks of it though, that is a "either/or" kind of file instead of a "settings" file . sorry

Sorry, No Luck. Could you show me a text version of your Graphics Rules.sgr file? I think that might hold the key. Thank you so much for trying.
