Conservative Think Tank

In developrd nations you do not expect a government body to completely insult half a country but thats what has happened in the UK!

The conservative think tank decided amongst themselves that the North of the UK, which yes is generally less well of than the South of the UK was not good enough

their statement made out that the great cities of the north are in lack of repair and everyone should move south to the overcrowded already southeast.

On top of that, whilst the population in the Northeast grows just as fast as it does in the south the think tank has said that it wants the 3 million new homes the UK, which need to be built by 2015, to all be built in the south, well thank you very much because that is going to do a great job of improving the less well off north and providing homes. On top of that we pay the exact same taxes so why should we be 'second best'

saying that there is a general theme (I am not saying everyone agrees) in the south that the north is a waste of space, well I say let the people in the south think that, we are the ones with the great cities of Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and many more, only one in the South - London, and that is way to expensive for the majority of us 'lower class northerners' , not to mention suffering from water shortages, power shortages, gridlock on a regular basis and been terribly snobby.

I think I would like to stay in the North thank you very much think tank.

comments welcome, please note that when I say the South thinks the North is lower class im talking of the vast majority, not the full majority.

1. Think tanks tend to hand out ideas like candy so I don't know why you're treating this as a personal insult.

2. It's generally a good idea to link to your source, in this case a statement. (?)

3. Relocations would play a role in improving the less well off north. If there are more jobs in the south than in the north then it makes sense to move people from up north or increase their mobility, since it's probably harder to move commercial jobs there and probably more expensive to move government jobs there. If there's less competition for suitable employment in the north,  it'll be a bit easier for people there to find employment.

Well lets face facts.

1. The south of England is more developed, has higher concentration of wealth making industry and companies and does have London, the world capital in the financial sense.

2. I doubt the 'majority' of Southern's deem the North useless and lower-class. Everyone has the ability to posses snobbery and pass judgement, as you yourself exhibited when you mentioned gridlock, power and water shortages etc.

3. The North of England does suffer from greater levels of illness, unemployment, lower economic growth and lower levels of educational achievement. You can't argue with facts.

4. Pretty much all 'think' tanks talk utter nonsense and there is no need to become all offended by their 'findings'.

The North of England has suffered in recent decades and it is poorer than southern England. Northern England has a lower economic growth figure than Northern Ireland, a region of only 1.7 million. It has started to improve and attract greater inward investment, however a lot of this investment has been directed at property, particularly residential property, and as such will prove a future problem for several years to come for the northern economy.

The north has nothing to be ashamed about, just take it on the chin, the north like my own Northern Ireland, Wales and many other parts of the UK were vital in building the modern nation of the United Kingdom and what happened in these regions drove and fuelled the engine that powered one of the greatest and most powerful nations in history. Nothing to be ashamed about at all 4.gif

The report he's talking about is the Cities Unlimited report published by the think thank Policy Exchange. For those short of time, the BBC reported on it and Cameron's response to it. It's also important to note that this is not a government body, but an independent think thank, and the only connection it has to UK politics is the fact that it's conservative (and thus probably favoured to the Tories, although Cameron (naturally) emphasised its independent, charitable statues), all according to its Wikipedia article.
