Questions about Ships and Ports

I haven't downloaded any of the modded or user made seaports, but I am having problems will the current ones in game.

Although, I never noticed it before, in my cities, the ships never seen to be able to sail out of the harbor, and if they do, they go up a river, or sail right into an adjacent coastline and disappear. I have made my harbors deep and given the seaports plenty of space and land. Having lived near the water in Boston, Norfolk, and now Seattle, I love port cities, but I can never seem to recreate them in the game.

Is there a way to change this so that the ships can sail in any direction you like? Or at least could someone tell me how to know where the ships in the game will go based on the map?

No.. they are for looks only and bear no relationship to travel

The traveling ships are crappy, eye candy. The only solution to fix the problem is to build the port in a city where deep water covers most of the city, with a very small amount of coast lines. Even if the ships travel to the right direction, without bumping into the coastline, they will disapper after traveling a certain distance.
