Save a back up for my city

My hard drive just broke and I lost my city. I want to start build one, but this time I'll make a back up file. The problem is I don't know which file I should make the back up??

  1. Choose your back-up method, whether it be another hard drive in your computer or network, online storage, or a CD.
  2. Open Windows Explorer.
  3. Open My Documents.
  4. Browse to: \SimCity 4\Regions\ [C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\SimCity 4\Regions\ is full folder path with Username being your Windows account name]
  5. The folder names will be the title of your region. Copy the regions you want to save to your back-up source (CD, external hard drive, etc.)
  6. Remember to back-up your "SimCity 4" cities regularly. The more often you play, probably the more you'll want to back-up.
This what I got from browsing in the internet. but it doesn't work. Please advise

Thanks

Hello havevun,

At just what point do the instructions fail to work?

Presuming that you managed to follow steps 2, 3, and 4 -

In my case I have a region named "Long Waters",

at the end of step 4, I would be viewing either

the folder "My Documents\SimCity 4\Regions" or

the folder "My Documents\SimCity 4\Regions\Long Waters".

I would want to back up the entire "Long Waters" folder (including all of it's files and any subfolders).

If I wanted to backup the "Long Waters" folder to a write-able CD drive at "D:",

I would make sure the folder "Long Waters" is in the right hand pane,

then scroll in the left pane to find "D:" and drag the folder "Long Waters"

from the right pane - and drop it onto my "D:" drive on the left pane.

After which I need to remember to burn the files that are ready to write onto a

new (blank?) CD.

Hope this example helps,

-NetPCDoc

No detail is too small to be micromanaged.

You may want to backup the PLUGINS folder in the same folder.. if you have any custom content it can be quite annoying to remake all those after a crash

Whether you chose to backup a single region or your whole regions folder is up to you.. I normally backup only regions/cities where I have done work on them.. but if you get custom regions, you may want to back those up too.. you can backup a single city at a time but I suggest you practice saving and restoring a city a few times before you get yourself into a "critical" situation.. it is not hard, but it isn't straightforward either..

shame SC4 didn't include some kind of "backup/restore" function.. would have been real useful..

I would only include the regions that you have been building in. Also, backup the plugins so when the hard drive breaks again, you don't need to redownload everything, and if the plugins start to crash the game, you can restore the plugins from the backup. If you want the SC4 pictures, backup those files also.

I would recommend a CD, SD memory card (I would recommend those the most since they are very small in size, but large in storage capacity, depending which type you buy), or a flash drive.

Be sure to keep the old backup files after getting a new copy, in case if the new backup files are messed up or something.

I'd use a second hard drive for ALL of the backups.. since the cost is around $0.20 per GIGABYTE.. hard to beat for cost.. (ex. 1 Terrabyte .. or 1000Gigabytes .. or 1000000 Megabytes selling for under 200 dollars).. I hate fooling with CD's for backup.. very slow and easily damaged.. plus also easy to lose.. 2.gif In fact I just saw a special for a 500GB drive in an external eSATA/USB box for under $100 including shipping at newegg.com .. they'll be throwaways soon.. haha
