The "newer town" being from the 18th century almost sounds like an oxymoron, though I know it's not.

The city looks amazing! Very Mediterranean. I think you've got the look you're going for.

Callbat: Thanks. Yes, LotEditor is a godsend for my CJ. 4.gif

ilikehotdogsalot: Thanks hotdogs. I'm glad you liked it.

Schulmanator: Thanks, I forgot the name but I believe Haarlemergold made it.

edmonton_stinks: In some European cities (like Warsaw, for example) that has an area called "New Town" which is essentially an area that was built in addition to the old medieval center. Thanks for the compliment. 4.gif

jesus_navidad: Thanks, I used to use Imageshack but it was being stupid so now I use Photobucket. 2.gif

Tomorrow I'm leaving for Mexico. 9.gif Too bad ST has been down all this time so I haven't had as much time to update before I leave.

    Anyways:

    valenzueladecmo4.jpg

Avenida Mayor splits through the New Town. It's often crowded during the day and during summer it can be a pedestrian's hell. The great shopping and ornate architecture make up for it though. 3.gif

    Valenzuela-Jan20031211587052copy.jpg

The area by the marina and waterfront is much more easygoing and less crowded during the day. The sea breeze and shady trees make it a great place to be during a hot summer.

    Valenzuela-Jan20031211587074copy.jpg

At night the New Town is bustling with seafood bars and tucked away nightclubs. Unless you plan on staying up, it's probably best to get a courtyard view hotel room here. 3.gif

    Carife-Feb13081212187978copy.jpg

The Palacio Nacional is essentially where the Royal family lives when at work. It was built when the royal family outgrew the old fortress outside of the city and wanted something closer to the Old Town.

Well, that's it for now. 4.gif

Oh, I always have to make these little references and flashbacks don't I? 21.gif

Hi. I'm back from Mexico. I went to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Chichen Itza, Merida, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Mexico City. 9.gif My favorite city was Merida, it was soo pretty and colonial and colorful. Mexico City was nice, but way too polluted. San Cristobal was pretty nice too, and we went to Chamula, which is a Mayan village outside of San Cristobal. Anyways, I've come up with an idea of remaking Mesias entirely. But right now I'm too tired to type a whole bunch. lol

heh, I'll be sure to check this when I get back 2.gif

Callbat: lol, Madrid is a lovely city. A bit too grand for my taste though, I prefer smaller streets like in the barrio Santa Cruz in Sevilla.

    ilikehotdogsalot: Thanks!

    jacquilina: Thanks 4.gif

CarmineHilton: Yes, Simcity tends to be way too dull as far as colors go, so I like to add more color to my pics to make it feel more sunny and mediteranean.

Schulmanator: I feel honored! I'll be sure to send a little thank-you gift to the admiral. 3.gif

nihonkaranws: It's on the STEX. I'm pretty sure it's a university.

vinvin du 13: Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

bobinator: Thanks. Took me a while to make 'em. 4.gif

edmonton_stinks: That's good to hear, I was worried it would be a bit repetitive.

    nottheboss: Yup, I am. 9.gif

ilikehotdogsalot (again):  Yep. I like looking back at the pictures, it makes me inspired to play Simcity.

Callbat (again): Yeah, I was homesick in Mexico City, but after I came home and played on my comp for a while I remembered how boring it is 3.gif

jacquilina (again): Thanks, good to see you again. 9.gif

    edmonton_stinks (again): Thanks

hijodecordoba: Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

Now for post-earthquake Carife, areas of the old town that were added after the 1700 earthquake ravaged the city.

    lisbon400.jpg

On December 8th, 1765, on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception when everybody was gathering to the many churches of Carife, a 7.0 scale earthquake off the coast ravaged the city, causing many buildings to catch on fire and collapse. A tsunami also plummeled the coastline of the city, causing major destruction.  After the earthquake, the ruler of the time, Marcos de Pumba, gave himself total powers in order to restore the city and restabilize the economy.

    Carife-Feb13081213561553copy-2.jpg

The Plaza Nacional is a large plaza with a statue of an angel in it, representing the nation's uniqueness amongst Europe. The Puerta de Triunfo is a large gate that was built by Marcos de Pumba. Nearby the gate, the building with the many arched windows is the Biblioteca Nacional.

    Carife-Feb21081213563659copy-1.jpg

The square is lined with a mixture of older and newer buildings, because after the terrible earthquake in the 1700's, many new buildings were built in a more baroque/neoclassical style.

    Carife-Feb21081213563290copy-1.jpg

A perfect example is the Opera House, one of the city's main landmarks, perched on a hill just south of the old town. Not much is known about the old opera house, except it was designed to look similar to the Opera in Paris. After the earthquake, it had collapsed due to poor building. The current one was built in a baroque neoclassical style with a very colorful tile-covered dome that can be seen all over the city. There are also wonderful views of the old town and Cathedral from the balconies. Nowadays, modern office buildings surround the opera house.

    Carife-Feb21081213564010copy-1.jpg

You can see tons of 18-19th century buildings around the Opera House, some of which rub shoulders with post-modern office buildings.

That's all for now. Next will be the suburbs and outside towns.

    And possibly an airport? 31.gif

Wow, looks great. I love the opera house- It looks modern, but it is old! The modern building next to it adds a great touch!

I probably won't have alot of time to update in the next couple of days, so I figured I might as well update now. 4.gif

    view-fron-hotelcopy.jpg

    Carife-Jun27081213765538copy.jpg

Cordebeza Int'l is the largest airport on the island and serves as a hub for flights in San Pedro and the Balaeric Islands of Spain.

    Carife-Jun27081213765685copy.jpg

Despite having only one runway (due to lack of space in compact and crowded Carife) it is still a very important airport and is the central airport for AeroPedro, the nation's official airline.

Now let's head outside of the city to some suburban towns and villages.

    Carife-Jan10081212187449copy.jpg

Veljas is a small town along the beach, that is actually within Carife's city limits. It gets crowded on weekends when families come down here to relax and play on the beach. There is also a lovely market in front of the baroque church of Our Lady of the Assumption.

    Carife-Jan10081212187329copy.jpg

Cabalrio is also a beach resort town, but is cut off from Carife by mountains. It is a smaller vacation spot but can get crowded during weekends and summers. Few people live here despite the large crowds. This town is also known for it's wonderful seafood.

    Carife-Feb13081212187739copy.jpg

Valle del Cruz is a more residential town with only a small church, parochial school, and a train station that heads to Carife. Many of the people who live here are upper-middle class, and have offices in central Carife where they commute to and work.

Next update will be about... well I'm not sure yet. 3.gif

i like the opera. it's the one from manaus, isn't it? it fits very well into the city. the same with the archway, it's beautiful.

your last picture gives a felling of a real small trainstation in a little pueblo somewhere in the landscape 4.gif - well done. great airport, too.

Sky Guy: Thanks, I love a contrast in building style.

edmonton_stinks: Thanks, I love that opera house, it's so colorful.

    Madog: Thanks lol

hijodecordoba: Yep. It is... you'd never think about it being in the middle of the Amazon. I also like that train station, it's kind of Northern European but it just seems to fit. Gracias 4.gif

jacquilina: Thanks, I'm glad you like my beach! 4.gif

    Flann: Thanks for the comment!

Bizquena is a small village outside of Carife, and is most famous for its monastery.

    Bizquena-Jul25011212092357copy.jpg

The Monastery is very old, it was built in 1340 on the site of a small chapel dedicated to St. Francis. It houses around 30 Franciscan friars who live and work within the monastery. The abbey has a famous statue called the Madonna of Bizquena.

    Bizquena-Feb17021214177276copy.jpg

Near the village are tons of farms; most of which grow olives, oranges, tomatoes, and cork trees.

    Bizquena-Jun14001212090740copy.jpg

The Bizquena River winds its way through mountains covered in cypress and olive trees. It appears to be a beautiful and sunny afternoon, no?

Well, it doesn't look very sunny on the opposite side of the Atlantic 9.gif:
