The recent thread concerning the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD formats(in which Blu-ray won) compelled me to unveil something truly remarkable.

Technology has certainly come a long way.  And very soon, the storage capacity of a modern Desktop will be in a single disc.

I have an 80gig HD and I am no-where near filling it up despite having a huuge My Docs folder including days of music, thousands of photos, hundereds of documents and it is only about 20gig.

How on God's earth would I ever, ever fill up 3.9 terabytes.

It's just insane.

Depends. The avrage user would probably never need that much HD space but I know a guy that watched over 1900 GB worth of anime. 

And if you go to Dreamhack you could fill that HD space without breaking a sweat.

Its all percetly not legal of course :need moars pirate smileys:

I had 200G on my pc and needed to upgrade to an external hard drive at 500G for storage and back up. I have a vast amount of music, documents, pictures and of course my bulging 6.5G SC4 plugin folder which is really just a horrendous amount of plugins to have really.

Disk sounds interesting, be good to follow its development. Though this is most likely aimed at business and corporate users as well as maybe national libraries.

I do find it amazing how small word porcessing programs used to be.

and how massive they are today. but most people still only use very little of what they can actualy do.

    HVD is not the only technology in high-capacity, optical storage media. InPhase Technologies is developing a rival holographic format called Tapestry Media, which they claim will eventually store 1.6 TB with a data transfer rate of 120 MB/s, and several companies are developing TB-level discs based on 3D optical data storage technology. Such large optical storage capacities compete favorably with the Blu-ray Disc format. However, holographic drives are projected to initially cost around US$15,000, and a single disc around US$120–180, although prices are expected to fall steadily.[5] The market for this format is not initially the common consumer, but enterprises with very large storage needs.

    The only real use I can see for this is holding a heck of alot of content for a TV series, family videos or Movies at the highest quality rate possible.

    You could probably use those kind of discs to store the lord of the rings in HD, with extra content all on just 3 disks.

    Or multiple seasons of a show, on a single disk.

    The technology is truly promising and exciting to see how this will all unfold in the long run. 4.gif

    Yeah; I mean thats enough memory to hold a videogame containing the ENTIRE ACCURATE metro of New York or Los Angeles, including access to all their forms of transportation,  buildings, landmarks, maybe even sewers.4.gif

    But you also need to keep in mind, that computers are doubling in basicly everything. Also, Media qualitys are also kicking ass in comparison to way back when (40's 70's, 80's ect). so if in 1940 we have a comparible to the bit rate of 12kbps, then 20 years later a comparible to the bit rate of 40, and 1999 - 300kbps...... 2008 = 5.5mbps, and so forth. so we can have a full movie with maybe 2+ the amount of resolution and sound quality as now.

    but yeah that is a lot that we probably dont need. maybe we can have fully interactive disks with 3d menues where you can "float" from one title to the next.

    I know 3.9 TB sounds like alot now, but it wasn't that long ago (lets say 1998) that filling up a 200GB HDD sounded almost impossible for the average person. Right now people fill that up pretty easily with compressed movies and video. IMO though a HVD will never be needed for anything other than back-up. 1080p blue-ray will be around for a long time while since anything better would require a TV with a higher resolution than 1080p and the market is having enough trouble trying to adapt to that market. The 1080p market will probably be around for at least the next 20 years. Therefore there will be no reason to replace blue-ray with a higher capacity disk.

    Blue-ray will probably give way to an internet market (much like music has) once hard drive space and internet download speeds become sufficient to allow it. Don't be surprised when 10 years from now it is very common place to have a computer somehow (whether a dedicated or networked) connected to all of your TVs to and allow instant access to all of your movies.  The only problem I can see with this platform is how do I take the movie to a friends house?  Maybe something like an Ipod that can either directly connect or wirelessly connect via a home network.


    We only need enjoy one day at a time.
