Don't forget "hung". Why does everyone want to over complicate things? It's just "hanged".

EDIT: After reading the rest of this thread, I have something else: People who think Guitar Hero is a game of pathetic guitar wanna-be's. Ok, here's the breakdown -- 94% casual players, 5% 8-11 year old who think thay are cool and are pathetic guitar wanna-be's, 1% people who really like the game and realize that it is, infact, just a game. Those 1% will probably go on to play guitar if they can get they're hands on one (Guitar Hero happens to be a lot cheaper 3.gif)

I agree that many grammar rules are overcomplicated.

It's drive, drove, driven but not dive, dove, diven.

It's freeze, froze, frozen but not squeeze, squoze, squozen.

and we wonder why people have trouble learning the language.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Oh, the joy of third grade English... But it's not necessarly to overcomplicate something by using irregular verbs, as SkiGeek said, people are hanged, while all other things are hung. Other languages are worse—English has at least only three forms of each strong verb, while other seem like they're constructed with the sole purpose of torturing those who are trying to learn it.

I think your right, krbe -- it's to help distinguish. Like 'sit' and 'sat' which still confuse me 46.gif

While we're at grammar related stuff, some people say "could care less" when they actually mean "couldn't care less." Look closely at the two sentences and notice the change introduced by the contraction. You'll see that the first suggests you care to some degree or another, while the other indicates that you've hit the zero point.

Also, using any such phrase as "a quiet din filled the room" is incorrect. A din is a loud collection of noises, so the phrase "quiet din" is oxymoronic.

Ah, I hate that too. I remember watching that show that used to play on Nick a while ago, Fairly Odd Parents, and somebody said that I was thinking "Wait, what? That makes no sense at all". It also bugs me when someone says "Same difference" -- What does the even mean? Same to what? If someone can explain that horrid phrase, I'll give you a cookie.

My best friend introduced me to Genesis pre-Collins. The old prog-rock Peter Gabriel stuff is so amazing. Selling England by the Pound is one of my favourite albums of all time.

It's definetly hung by the way. Hanged is when you use rope to kill people from a gallow. "I hanged around" sounds totally wrong as does "He hanged a print of the photograph on the wall"

Except in a lot of the other languages similar to English, they did a better job of taking foreign words and adapting them to fit with the rules of the language.  I won't speak for other languages, but English is known to have exceptions to the exceptions to the rules.

One thing that I've heard that's interesting is that English is simultaneously one of the easiest and hardest languages to learn.  It's easy in the sense that there's so much casual slang and so many words used improperly that you can communicate general concepts to people fairly easily.  Where it gets sticky is when you are having to use more formal English, like when you're on a company's telephone menu, which has lead to the "press 1 for English, dos para la prensa espanola" phenomenon.

Or so says an ESL teacher I used to know.

Basically, it's used in situations where there is more than one way to achieve the same result, and the speaker in question considers the differences between the various methods to be inconsequential.  To use a numerical example 4-2=2 and 4÷2=2.  In the first, you're subtracting, and in the second, you're dividing.  Different method, but you still get the same result.

The most interesting about English and foreign speakers, is that in negotiations where two parties are speaking bad English, gets better results than in situations where one party are fluent in English and the other not.

One German physicist I used to know said that English was a great language to communicate with others at meetings and such since everyone knew some English, but in general he felt it was useless to work with.

Now, if anybody feel they need a little grammar lesson:

    CENTURION:

What's this, then? 'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?

    BRIAN:

It-- it says, 'Romans, go home'.

    CENTURION:

No, it doesn't. What's Latin for 'Roman'? Come on!

    BRIAN:

    Aah!

    CENTURION:

    Come on!

    BRIAN:

    'R-- Romanus'?

    CENTURION:

    Goes like...?

    BRIAN:

    'Annus'?

    CENTURION:

    Vocative plural of 'annus' is...?

    BRIAN:

    Eh. 'Anni'?

    CENTURION:

    'Romani'. 'Eunt'? What is 'eunt'?

    BRIAN:

    'Go'. Let--

    CENTURION:

    Conjugate the verb 'to go'.

    BRIAN:

Uh. 'Ire'. Uh, 'eo'. 'Is'. 'It'. 'Imus'. 'Itis'. 'Eunt'.

    CENTURION:

    So 'eunt' is...?

    BRIAN:

Ah, huh, third person plural, uh, present indicative. Uh, 'they go'.

    CENTURION:

But 'Romans, go home' is an order, so you must use the...?

    BRIAN:

    The... imperative!

    CENTURION:

    Which is...?

    BRIAN:

Umm! Oh. Oh. Um, 'i'. 'I'!

    CENTURION:

    How many Romans?

    BRIAN:

Ah! 'I'-- Plural. Plural. 'Ite'. 'Ite'.

    CENTURION:

    'Ite'.

    BRIAN:

    Ah. Eh.

    CENTURION:

    'Domus'?

    BRIAN:

    Eh.

    CENTURION:

    Nominative?

    BRIAN:

    Oh.

    CENTURION:

'Go home'? This is motion towards. Isn't it, boy?

    BRIAN:

Ah. Ah, dative, sir! Ahh! No, not dative! Not the dative, sir! No! Ah! Oh, the... accusative! Accusative! Ah! 'Domum', sir! 'Ad domum'! Ah! Oooh! Ah!

    CENTURION::

    Except that 'domus' takes the...?

    BRIAN:

    The locative, sir!

    CENTURION:

    Which is...?!

    BRIAN:

    'Domum'.

    CENTURION:

    'Domum'.

    BRIAN:

    Aaah! Ah.

    CENTURION:

    'Um'. Understand?

    BRIAN:

    Yes, sir.

    CENTURION:

Now, write it out a hundred times.

    BRIAN:

Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.

    CENTURION:

Hail Caesar. If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.

    BRIAN:

Oh, thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar and everything, sir! Oh. Mmm!

When the people who graduate are those who have conduct issues and those that don't graduate are the nice people (and are your closest friends too). Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I made it. But still... I don't know what the heck my teachers were thinking when they graded us but that really, really, really stinks.

Pretty much all that annoys me, is simply injustice. Things happening when they needn't. People killed for stupid, pathetic reasons, such as monetary gain, or accrual of power, or whatever. As Dumbledore once said, 'humans have a knack for doing exactly what's wrong to themselves'. (Something like that.)

Genocides that occur just because of some ill-founded prejudices and racism. (Rwanda, anyone?)

People that are treated better than others just because they have more money and influence. All human lives are sacred and equal, IMO. No-one deserves better or worse than anyone else – we ALL deserve the best treatment imaginable... but I'm getting far too idealistic here.

Definately, the church, Pope, all that (deleted word so I'm not stoned later on). Stupid cults, religions. No-one realizes this yet!??

Also, when THINGS DON'T WORK AS THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO!!!!! I am so sick and tired of booting my PC, expecting to surf the Web, write a bit of my novels, maybe advance my songs a bit... and end up hopelessly entwined in endless troubleshooting. Game doesn't work, so you head on the Net to ask for help, then 'cause you're in Saturday no-one's there on the official help lines, so you ask on the fansites (ex. ST), then have to wait an hour for someone to answer they don't know how to do it, and please explain better; you do so, they still don't understand; you try to fix it yourself, but then find a virus has crippled your system (disabled Task Manager, for example); then you see your Antivirus is outdated, and has been for months because the notification was disabled somehow, and you can only reactivate it by paying hundreds of bucks... And to boot, all the above really did happen one particularly disastrous night...

Happens to me so often I've gotten some bald patches... at 16!!!!! DIE, BILL GATES!!! I  H8 U!!!!!

    [Pants]

Got that out of the system now.

Also, stupid media sensationalisation of completely pointless events. Who gives a stinking crap what famous actresses got divorced, who's suing whom, etc.? Let them all be forgotten!!!

Finally, it really bothers me more than anything else when you're complaining your games don't work, than some feeble old coots come and moan, 'in my day, they didn't have that stuff, and we were quite all right...' Is it normal for me to want to knock their canes out from under them? You don't have games in your day; NOW WE DO, so shut up. If your hoops broke or your rivers went dry, you'd whine too, so be quiet.

Please forgive me if you understand little of the above.

I’m a guy who just can’t guy right.

Closed minded ignorant religious zealots, or closed minded people in general they don't have to be religious, but more times than not, are -- this is based on my own experience.

Not many things really annoy me because I tend to just deal with life 9.gifAfter reading the above post I decided I have a lot more things I'm annoyed about.

When gang warfare, doesn't kill the people it's suppose to. Innocent bystanders die more often than the shooters and the ones being shot at, honestly the solution to getting rid of the gangsters if to give them all laser-guides and shooting lessons so they solve the issues themselves and kill each other off. After that real education and social programs can help people. Get rid of the truly bad ones.

When I'm not doing all that I can in school and hiding it because I'm afraid to get grounded and when the issue finally gets to my mom she grounds me, thereby affirming my fears and pushing me back into a cycle of fear and mistrust. that is what's getting on my wick this week.
